This was one of the worst experiences I had on a trip - the guide claimed Belle Mare was closed at the time he picked us up & took us to a subpar shack down a dirt road & steered us to one shop. There were other shops nearby but he did not allow us to stop & browse. We did not have any rum or chocolate tasting. We were driven back to the resort within 30 minutes - very disappointing. Not recommend & guides should be vetted to ensure services are rendered. The store picture on the website did not match were we were driven to.

It was easy, convenient and got a lot of shopping done in one spot! Franzois was super nice and was excited to welcome us into his “home”. My husband was there, especially, for the cigars and really enjoyed watching them being hand rolled. He was given one to light up and smoke. Even for me it smelled good! The Dominican chocolate is the best! We are going home with some chocolate bars a bag of hot chocolate latte! It’s worth the $6 to be driven there and back. And don’t forget to tip!

Eddie and the entire group on this tour are awesome and super informative. They aren’t out to just sell you something, they are going to give you this history behind it.

Don Alexander is a great guy. However, this excursion is nothing more than a $5 taxi ride to be sold to. It is not a cigar shop, but your typical Caribbean shop selling trinkets with an 8 foot sections of cigars that were actually made in the store, as well as fake Cuban cigars, but he is honest about them being fake. There is someone rolling cigars in the shop that you can watch, but I do not believe he speaks english. So you only get to watch him make them. Looking at the description of the tour now, I may have had expectations that were different than what they should have been.

Anyways, Don will give you a free cigar that the cigar roller made, which was actually very good. And then he will proceed to sell you some cigars. He started out trying to sell me 100 cigars, which would last me many many years. I did enjoy the stick he gave me, so I purchased 25 cigars from him for $7 per and we also bought some gifts for family back home.

I did smoke one cigar after I got home, and it was full strength. The rest will sit in my humidor for a while before I try another. If they are good, Don said we can order again over the phone and he will ship them to us, which I may end up doing.

Just know exactly what to expect when you go. We left the resort that was 30 minutes away at 9:30 and returned back to the hotel at 12. Our resort is far away so we were unable to get trinkets and gifts anywhere else, so this was well worth it to us. This is an extremely cheap tour, so if it’s worth it to you to go, then go for it!

We were never shown a tour or how cigars are made...it was basically being shown the display of cigars and then haggling over prices and then we were taken to a souvenir shop with no prices and were overcharged on everything, essentially because we’re American and where we were staying. I would normally never say that, but it was clear he thought we had brought all kinds of money to spend and increased all prices on cigars and souvenirs. I paid $150 for souvenirs that are probably worth $30. It was in a very sketchy part of town also, which didn’t help. I just paid the money so we could go back to the hotel. It was worth more to me than the money. I feel like my $15 was a waste and I ended spending much more than I ever wanted to.
