Ban Gioc Waterfall is the largest and most stunning waterfall in Vietnam, is situated in the Cao Bang region in the country's northeast. The water is 300 meters broad and 30 meters high as it descends three floors.
The water for the waterfall comes from the Quay Son River. This gorgeous river, which is emerald blue, originates in China and travels through a breathtaking scenery of limestone cliffs and rice paddies. Despite being very well-known on social media and having easy access by road, the Ban Gioc Waterfall is still not a popular tourist destination. There aren't many foreign and local tourists outside of the weekends and public holidays.

This was the best experience I’ve had ever. Usually I refuse to camp but the camping was my highlight. Everyone was so lovely and our guide Luan was so funny, knowledgeable, accommodating and kind.

He showed us lots of amazing traditional restaurants, was our personal photographer and hype man and made sure we were comfortable the whole time.

The countryside is absolutely stunning, there was not one part of the three days that I wasn’t amazed.

Camping at angel mountain was such a special experience. We had drinks and dinner with the locals who were amazing, went swimming and paddle boarding in the river as it was the wet season and had so so much fun. I couldn’t recommend the 3 day experience more and I’m so glad we did this.

Thank you Luan and our amazing driver for this special experience!! 💕💕

Such an amazing trip, especially when guided by Luan!! All the attractions we saw were absolutely gorgeous and Luan had all the knowledge to any questions we had! The camping on the second night was definitely a highlight. The tents were spacious and comfortable, and the breeze off the lake meant that the night wasn’t too hot. Just perfect. Dinner with the locals was so fun, everyone we met on this trip was so friendly and fun! Plus, to wake up and see the beautiful Angel Eye mountain is a memory I will cherish forever.

Thank you Luan for an unforgettable trip, and to Mr Son for being the best driver!!! We love you guys!!!

We had a great time on the 3 days 2 nights tour to Ban Gioc with Vietnam Typical Tours. We booked very last minute, and the company was still able to accommodate us. Jenny and our tour guide, Dustin, were attentive and helpful. We got to see Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave, and Angel's Eye Mountain. All three were spectacular natural attractions, and we enjoyed camping near Angel Eye Mountain on our second night--one of the most peaceful places we've been in Vietnam. Would highly recommend!

We had a fantastic time in Cao Bang with Freddy who was a great host. Angel Eye Mountain was by far and away the most amazing setting for a camping trip we have ever had. Accommodation at the campsite was well organised and the hotel was clean and comfortable. Food was expertly chosen by Freddy who tried to give us a real insight into the cuisine of the region. Tiger cave was really interesting and the waterfalls were beautiful but a bit short of water due to our visit being during the dry season. It’s a long drive from Hanoi (6hrs) but it’s worth it for the camping alone.

The tour was very fun. Amazing guide. The camping was so much fun. And beautiful waterfalls even though it was dry season. Our guide made sure we would go when the water was released.

Pickup and drop off was smooth, and everything ran on-schedule.

Hospitality 5/5
David was our guide and incredibly thoughtful in making sure everyone felt included. He had lots of information to dispel and knew a lot about the history and significance of the different areas we were visiting. He continued to follow up with me to ensure I was feeling well, even after I had left the trip. He was also thoughtful enough to confirm my dad had made it back safely as well. David was friendly and very professional during the entirety of the trip.

Sights 5/5
Angel Eye was stunning. A hidden serene meadow underneath towering mountains set amongst the sun and clouds looked like something out of a fairytale. Ban Gioc was not as impressive in person, and the boat ride did not appear worth it for a view not much closer than what can be had walking up to the shoreline. Of all waterfalls I’ve visited, this was not a memorable one despite its fame. The waterfalls off to the side of the river were more beautiful in my eyes. The pagoda we visited was also beautiful and had great intricate details with an excellent view of the valley beneath. It quite an uphill trek, but be sure to bring cash if you’d like a local to bring you to the top via motorbike. They’re very friendly people so we did not mind supporting their efforts.

Schedule 3/5
The tour was very long, yet not filled with very much in between. I may be more used to fast-paced tours with more sightseeing throughout the trip, so the slower pace may be enjoyable if that is what you seek. While I am grateful Angels Eye appeared on the itinerary twice (because I in fact had to leave the tour a day early due to medical necessity involving food I had consumed during the tour), for those who fulfill the 3 day camping itinerary, this means you’ll visit Angel Eye twice — I found this odd and redundant, wishing the itinerary could be adjusted so that this wasn’t the case.

Food and water 3/5
Food was repetitive as others mentioned. We ate mostly the same thing for lunch each day and one dinner (3 lunches total were had at the same restaurant), and the quality was mediocre at best. I would have preferred if variety was introduced somehow, and felt this was a shortcut and missed opportunity. When meals were had, no efforts were made to explain any regional dishes aside from the river fish. Non-English speaking tourists were therefore left to explore the food without much insight.

We were offered sufficient water during the trip, but you’d have to request as needed on most occasions. While I understood drinks were not covered aside from water, we did receive some hot tea during the meals complimentary. It would have been a nice gesture and added value to the tour if either coffee or juice with the meals were included, without having to open one’s own tab for such a minute item. It feels unwelcoming to be told to go to the register to purchase your own drink with your food.

As a side note, it seems the tour is not generally well prepared to handle clients with specific food intolerance or requirements. There was no contingent plan in place for vegetarian guests, things were put together last minute, and I felt it unfair for them to have to simply “put up with it” and eat what scant amount they could from the meal everyone else was also sharing.

TL;DR THE 2 day tour was sufficient to see all the sights and experience the local food. Camping would have been amazing but if you are looking for peace and quiet, this may not be the camping you are expecting.

10/10 would recommend this trip. The unesco sights were stunning and I am glad we decided to go with the three day tour to fully explore each area. Tom and Elvis were great guides, they spoke good English and showed us an extra swimming area during the second afternoon. The accommodations were comfortable and the food was good, although a little repetitive (lots of fried pork, duck, and chicken). I’d recommend this to anyone looking to explore the waterfalls.

Luan and Sang, (tour guide and driver), what a great team!!
Luan spoke great English, he was so helpful and friendly. Just the two of us on this private tour in a modern air conditioned jeep which picked us up from our Hanoi hotel for the drive north. Lots of water provided in the car.

The drive is long but is necessary, they offered toilet stops etc often and we also stopped for lunch halfway in a nice restaurant. He told lots of cultural and historical knowledge on the journey which helped pass the time, but left us to snooze when we was tired. Stopped at the Tiger cave which was impressive before arriving at the hotel. Went out to a nice local restaurant for dinner which was near the hotel. Hotel was basic but clean and all you needed for 1 night.
Luan showed us a local swimming spot opposite the hotel where locals swim, a beautiful spot for a dip!
Day 2 had breakfast with some locals at the side of the road which was a great experience, the ladies were very welcoming. Onto a local Buddhist temple on a hill which has a great view over the Ban Gioc waterfall and onto to China’s borders. Then we visited the waterfall which was stunning, even had a swim at the smaller fall next to it. The large waterfall has a boat for 50,000 dong each which takes you right up to the spray, well worth it!
After lunch we stopped at a market for beers and then onto the campsite for the evening, what a stunning entrance this has. Amazingly special place, you felt lucky the locals let you camp there! Watched the sun set in the valley at the foot of the Angel eye mountain. Went for swim in a nearby waterfall and had an amazing BBQ with music on the night with the rest of the guests who arrived (campsite all set up before arrival). The campsite had phone charging battery pack, the car was a short walk away but we just packed overnight clothes into a small backpack we had.
Before we set off back to Hanoi we got a shower at a very nice homestay house local to the campsite.

The camping was an amazing experience, push yourself out of your comfort zone and you will be rewarded!

All meals, water, accommodation, entry fees, BBQ food etc included in the tour. Only spent money on campsite beers in the whole trip (treat Luan and Sang to one).

Brilliant experience from start to finish
