This was the low point of our trip to Vietnam. While we were unfortunately struck with poor weather and a group of exceptionally noisy and self centred ‘ship mates’ the biggest let down was the amount of garbage in Halong Bay. The beauty of limestone islands is now lost in the mountain of garbage that is floating EVERYWHERE! Name the type of garbage and it was floating around the islands. Plastic bags and bottles, polystyrene, wine bottles, rope, old fishing nets and even life jackets (Clearly off charter boats). No one from our cruise would swim in the water it was that bad. We went kayaking and I had to soak my swimmers in a hotel bath tub to get rid of the smell from the small amount of water that got in. Government and tour operators need to sort this out as this is a paradise lost if immediate action is not taken.

Just back from a 3 day cruise with Dora Cruise.(30 person ship) So, so many companies to chooses from, overwhelming. Most people do the Hanoi early am pickup and the long uncomfortable ride to the port. No, if you have a choice fly into Hai Phong (cat ba) airport, catch grab and head to a hotel the night before. We chose Paradise Hotel and Suites for $40. Luxury hotel, nice room, great breakfast. Lounge around in your room, catch a Taxi to your cruise boat late am (5 minutes away). Why cruise with all your luggage? Take what you need for the two night cruise, leave the rest at the hotel. After cruise, same deal, don't get stuck in transport 3-4 hours to Hanoi.
Definetly, worth getting here the night before, and or staying the night after.
Would choose Dora cruise again!

This something that you need to do. It’s about a 2hr drive from Hanoi where you will check in and take a tender to the bigger boat. The rooms are big with ensuite and balcony. I was on the Peony 2. The islands are mystical and enchanting and I lost count of how many pics I took. On the second day you are shuffled off to do a bike tour of a local town then have the opportunity to kayak and swim on the way back. This is a full day and I recommend you take a change of clothes. The water is chilly but ok once you’re in. The food is fine dining and cannot be faulted and the service matches this as well, I felt very spoilt. Depending on how much time you have in Vietnam the two night package is ample time. There is a quick tour of a cave on the morning you depart and it’s ok. You won’t feel you have missed anything if you choose to relax on the boat instead.

The bay and the islands are beautiful. You need to do the longer trip to have time to take in the beauty and the nature.
Passengers who did the two day, one night were rushed and I don't feel they got a similar experience.
The food on the cruise was great. But on the one day catamaran trip (day 2 of the cruise) to a local village was the highlight. They prepared the food for the small group on the boat, real Vietnamese food.

This is a literal scam, do not buy! We did 1 day of cruising and spent 1 night on the cruise. That was it, nothing more. On our second to last day we were dropped off on Cat Ba island and left to our own devices. Absolutely disgraceful. There are so many more cruises out there, please go for one of them!

Hi,
We had planned for a tour to Vietnam and booked flight tickets well in advance. We had around 2 months to do bookings and Halong Bay cruise was in our main agenda. When I did some study over internet, I was quite confused when I checked reviews about various cruises and various parameters one has to check before booking. I looked at various booking sites and felt like the prices were very high with incomplete itenary information. I thought that the best way would be go to Hanoi and look for some deals. I wanted to avoid tour agents or reaching out to Hotel for help as I know that they would have there own share. I also explored by writing directly to cruise companies hoping someone would respond and this worked. I could get a proper quote from a sales person from one of the cruise company and was offered around 50% of the price published in varous booking sites. He could give me a best offer as I approached him directly.
My experience with this sales person was very nice, he used to provide me all requested information about the trip. We exchanged several mails and I understold that they dont like talking directly over phone as they may be little hesitent to talk in english.. but I was comfortable exchanging mails. And I finally booked the tickets via a booking link he had sent.
I got lot of information after the trip and would like to share information thru this review.
I believe that one should look at the following things when planning a tour-
If the trip is to Halong bay or Bai tu long Bay:
Both are different destinations. They are different provinces and I heard that the corresponding taxes of operations are different. There are only 5% of cruises that go to Bai Tu Long Bay. These trips are quite expensive and most of the travelers are foreigners. Since, this place has less visitors this place is relatively less crowded.
Duration of trip:
I was on a 2 nights and 3 days trip. I have seen passengers who were getting off on day 2 morning. And new members joining us on the 2nd day. I believe 1 night is too short duration for such a fantastic trip. One should plan for 2 nights.
Most of the people may not know that the ship returns to the bay for pickup and drop of tourist every morning when the 2 nights stay people go for a tour on another boat on 2nd day morning. When we return back we could meet another batch of tourists.
Room with Balcony: Only few rooms have balconies in the cruises. The prices of these are higher by 30% and most of the times these are occupied by a family of 3 or 4. If you could afford it or get this it is a luxury. This is the best part of the cruise and you would love it.
Just incase you dont take a room with a balcony, still it is fine. As all of us get access to the terrace and should be no problem.
Various spots we get to visit:
I think, more or less every cruise takes us to one cave, one beach for swimming, An hour or so for Kayaking and floating village. Even if one additional spot is added or removed one should not be worried.
Cruises options:
There were several reviews that were describing about the age of the ship. Also, in few cases the cost of tour was varying based on this. But, I believe that it doesnt matter. When I saw several of them at the port, All were looking similar and were well maintained. All of them were looking decent. Size of cruise also does'nt matter as the cruise has only fixed route and most of the tours during the day happens by smaller boats associated with ship.
Pickup and Drop:
From Hanoi to Halong bay the cruise companies arrange for buses or vans. The road was good and the 4 hrs journey was quite comfortable with one break for breakfast on our way. When I traveled the van was a luxury one with push back seats.
Service:
My experience was very good in this aspect. The cruise companies are striving to make sure that they get good reviews. The staff is very polite, hardworking and are doing their best to speak english and always have a smile. The local people by nature are very nice and friendly. I have heard that the country have a police department specific for tourists and there are no incidents of any specific cheatings or issues. One should not be worrying about it at all.
Overall, my experience was very good and memorable one. Hope this review helps you to plan your trip.
