This is the SECOND time we have toured Kilauea with Kilauea Ecoguides. The first was 3 years ago with Eric, the owner, and the second a recent tour with Jay, a former national park ranger. Both were tremendous guides. The tours that they did were each unique, and not simply a repeat. In both they took us to an overlook to see into the crater, but also on walks in various parts of the park. We saw remnants of previous eruptions and lava flows, as well as discussion of the aftereffects of eruptions and differences in lava flows. Our 8 year old grandson joined us for this second tour. Jay took pains to speak directly with him about volcanic activity and the history of volcanoes in Hawaii compared to other volcanic areas, even emailing me copies of color graphics he used so my grandson could have them after the tour. Because one of our party fell sick at the last minute and couldn't join us, Ecoguides adjusted its charge to credit us for the missing adult. I can't praise this tour enough, whether for adults or children.

Our guide was very qualified with advanced degrees in geology and other earth sciences. He was very familiar with myths, local cultures and languages. Moreover, he was courteous and conscientious. We learned a lot and he was good company. Highly recommended.

Erik gave us an amazing, educational tour! This company caters to people who want to learn about the science of the volcano and the ecosystem that exists on its slopes. He covered volcanic activity, the flora that exists in this challenging environment, the history of the park, and even lots about the native Hawaiian culture related to the volcanos. We peppered him with questions, and he was happy to answer them all! Couldn't be happier with the experience. Be aware that this is mostly a walking tour, which actually helps with seeing everything that you can't see from a bus.

We had a terrific time with our guide, Tyson. Ventured to the base of the crater; beautiful hike Tyson imparted so much information to us. Well worth the time and effort.

We are 65 and the private tour by Eric was an intimate look at the Kilauea volcano crater area, while learning the answers to our questions on the spot.
We are very happy with this private tour experience and the awesome memories.

Erik was very knowledgeable and shared very interesting facts about the park, recent history of the area, Hawaiian culture, and recommendations for other activities. Additionally very personable and my family enjoyed our time in the park led by Erik.

Erik was one of the best guides we have ever had and made the tour fun and informative. This was a great start to our vacation and I give this tour my highest possible recommendation.
It may seem a little pricey but you get what you pay for.

We signed up for the 5-6 hour trip and had the pleasure of meeting Erik, the owner and lead guide. He was very personable and knowledgeable and gave us a great tour! Being a lifelong resident of Hawai’i as well as an experienced geologist and volcanologist, Erik is uniquely qualified to teach others about the volcanoes, Hawaiian culture, and what it’s like to live in Hawai’i.
We asked him a barrage of questions all day and he always answered with a smile - he truly enjoys teaching others about Hawai’i. After the tour was over he even emailed us a list of recommendations for restaurants, beaches, hikes and other activities.
We were a family of three and really enjoyed getting Erik’s undivided attention. I have no doubt we had a much better experience than we would have had either just going through the park on our own or with a larger tour. We got the benefit of focusing our time on the best areas without being surrounded by dozens of other people.
Erik really tailored the trip and the information towards our interests and provided the perfect overview of the volcanoes, geology, and Hawaiian history/culture, diving deeper into areas when we asked questions. Even our teenager who wasn’t initially all that interested started asking questions and enjoyed speaking with Erik.
We spent most of the tour out walking the trails while Erik educated us and spent very little time in the car driving between the different locations. I would guess your bang for your buck is much higher with this tour than with any others where they bus you around. The tour is distilled down to what is important rather than wandering through gift shops and tourist traps.
We would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone interested in a more personalized, exceptional experience. If you want to support a locally owned and operated small business while simultaneously getting the best experience, this is the right tour. Book it - you won’t be disappointed!
