Leave the hustle and bustle of Bangkok behind you for a full day visit to Kanchanaburi province. While nowadays it is a popular destination for travelers all around the world, Kanchanaburi is steeped in the horrifying history of the Death Railway.
This full day tour is a perfect combination between history and nature with visits to the JEATH Museum, the Bridge on the River Kwai and Erawan National Park with its stunning waterfalls.

The JEATH War Museum is dedicated to the story of the men who worked on the Death Railway. The acronym JEATH stands for the different nationalities of the POWs that worked on the construction of the railway between 1942 and 1943: Japan, England, America, Australia, Thailand and Holland (The Netherlands). The museum displays the actual items that were used for the construction of the Death Railway and it exhibits a large number of photographs taken by prisoners at the time. One of the three galleries featuring photos is housed within a bamboo hut that’s an exact replica of the shelters that the POWs (Prisoners of War) lived in during this time. The museum is also home to a bomb dropped by the allies to destroy the bridge but that failed to explode. NOTE: TOTAL TIME IS INCLUDING TRAVELING TIME FROM BANGKOK TO KANCHANABURI

The Bridge on the River Kwai was part of a strategic railway route to Burma in which the Japanese aimed to secure supplies with which to conquer other western Asian countries. It was 415 kilometres long and passed through the Three Pagodas Pass in Sangkhlaburi District, the northern most part of Kanchanaburi province. The Japanese Imperial Army brought the iron bridge from Java during the Japanese occupation of Thailand in World War II. It was then resembled by Allied Prisoners of War (POW) under Japanese supervision. Visiting the River Kwai Bridge and the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery encourages one to contemplate the intolerable treatment Allied prisoners of war, Thais, Burmese and Malayans were subjected to under the Japanese Imperial Army during the construction of the notorious Burma Railway, better known as Death Railway. The work on the railway was completed in 16 months, despite calculations by Japanese engineers that the construction would take at least 5 years!

Founded in 1975 as Thailand’s 12th National Park, the Erawan National Park is home to one of the most popular waterfalls in the country. The major attraction of the park is the 7-tiered Erawan Falls with emerald green ponds. The fall is called after the three-headed elephant from Hindu mythology as the top cataract resembles it. Here you have enough time for a refreshing swim right in the middle of the jungle or even walk to the top level of the waterfalls (if weather permits). Do not forget to bring swimwear and a towel. We had a lovely driver called Frank who was really helpful and attentive and provided us with water and couldn’t help enough, we met our guide Pinky at the war memorial she was fantastic, we are well travelled and had many guides but she was a different class her attention to detail, her knowledge and her general demeanor went well above what we would expect, at the waterfalls she was happy to take us as far up as we wanted we weren’t rushed at all and she even had lunch with us, a truly wonderful day out with two new friends, she even invited us to visit her and she would show us round her town, truly amazing !!

The driver and the guide were so kind and wonderful. The experience was so educational about the death railway and the boat ride and hike/swim were so energising and away from the city! Swimming at the waterfalls was something I could never forget. Definitely a trip worth taking.

Nice trip to start our vacation in Bangkok. We did Kanchanaburi, the boat trip to the bridge over the river kwai, a walk over the bridge, and than we drove to the waterfalls. We were able to do the 7 levels and to swim. Our English speaking guide Lisa was very nice and friendly. She had many tips to eat and interesting info. Beer, our taxi driver, was always on time and brought us safely everywhere.

The holiday train that crosses the Rover Kwai is interesting to see and learning some of the WW2 and POW history is worthwhile, but for me the highlight was the National Park. The water falls are gorgeous. The hike was not terrible, more the humidity that is challenging. But swimming in the pools and climbing under the water falls is a great memory to take home from Thailand.

Great day out, really worth it. Learning and remembering the history of death railway atrocity. Funny boat ride on the river up to Kwae Bridge. Final step was the waterfalls: beautiful jungle place. It wasn't too crowded today and we could really enjoy bathing at any level of the journey. We took the full 3 hours on site.
Few tips:
Going up, you might want to dress very lightly ie in bathing suit from start, to keep your clothes dry from sweat and water. Alternatively, bring some replacement clothing. Take a big breakfast to have enough time and reach 7th level. The drive is a bit lengthy but there are regular breaks.
Our guide Na was really helpful and available to make our day great.
Recommended to anyone who want an escape from big Bangkok.

Beautiful trip to the River Kwai. Very scenic waterfalls and pools.

Delicious meals in no 7.

Na brought the trip to life with extensive knowledge of the sobering JEATH Museum and the building of the railway.

Our driver got us there and back safely and quickly. The aircon in the mini bus was a godsend.

Great value. Highly recommended.

Although not very detailed description of the trip, it was more than I expected. First the boat trip from JEATH museum on the Mekong river to the famous bridge on Khwae river, where we first observed the train crossing the bridge then we crossed it by foot. Our journey continued to Erawan national park where I climbed to the top that is to 7th fall. Amazing jungle experience. Thanks to the guide Na and the driver Frenk.
