Located in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town destroyed by volcanic pyroclastic flows in 79 AD.
As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is famous as one of the few ancient cities that can now be seen in much of its original splendor, as well as for having been lost, along with Pompeii, in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 that buried it and preserved in time.

I am very disappointed in the tour and the tour company. A few days before the tour we received notice that our pickup time was being changed by over two hours and the pickup location was also changed. I contacted the tour operator multiple times with questions but they were very unresponsive. The actual time in Herculaneum was very rushed through, only being able to see a small part of the site and no opportunity to explore. The winery restaurant was a mass-scale operation cycling through multiple tour groups. We spent many many hours on the buses maneuvering through the tiny Italian streets amidst swarms of motorcycles and chaotic traffic. It was a miserable day. If I had it to do over again I would make individual arrangements or find a different tour company.
