Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley became an area of royal estates and country homes for the Inca, for the religious establishment and also agriculture one of this was the maize, a prestige crop for the Incas, to make chicha, a fermented maize drink the Incas and their subjects consumed at their many ceremonial feasts and religious festivals.

On this full day of Sacred valley tour you will visit impressive constructions of cities such as Pisac and Ollantaytambo, which still working their water fountains coming from the mountains rivers. The Sacred valley tour will take you around local villages, and meet local people with their traditional costumes that it will add up an unforgettable experience to your journey.

WHAT TO EXPECT

At the Pisac archaeological site, we’ll explore the extensive ruins and enjoy the beautiful views across the valley. You’ll be given a guided tour of the ruins, passing through various structures that once served as homes, storage rooms and temples, and you’ll see Inca altars, carvings, tunnels, caves and the famous Intihuatana, the “hitching post of the sun.” We’ll explore Pisac for about 90 minutes. Alternatively, if you’d like to spend more time in the market in Pisac instead of seeing the ruins, you can talk to your guide and arrange a time and a place to meet when the tour group returns through the market after the ruins.

We’ll now head on towards Urubamba, where we’ll stop for about 45 minutes for lunch (not included). Ollantaytambo was the royal estate of the Inca emperor Pachacuti, who conquered the region and built the town and a ceremonial center. We’ll spend about an hour exploring these magnificent ruins, visiting the amazing Temple of the Sun and seeing massive blocks of rock that were perfectly carved and polished by master Inca stonemasons. Ollantaytambo is also a fine example of Inca agricultural construction and hydro-engineering, with a complex series of stone water fountains, channels and agricultural terraces, the latter organized by elevation to create different microclimates for crop experimentation.

After Ollantaytambo, we’ll drive to Chinchero where we’ll spend about 30 minutes visiting the famous church and the massive Inca stone wall in the main plaza, which has ten trapezoidal niches. The colonial church, meanwhile, dates back to the early 17th century, and was built upon the foundations of an Inca temple or palace. The walls of the church are covered in wonderful floral and religious designs. The people of Chinchero are very much connected to the old traditions, and many still dress in colorful clothes that combine indigenous and Spanish influences. We’ll also have wonderful views from Chinchero, as the village is surrounded by the beautiful snowy-capped peaks of Chicón and Veronica.

Excellent tour. Very picturesque. Lots of amazing sights to see, loads of little markets and even wonderful local ice cream. Claudio was an excellent tour leader. We travelled with tour guide Claudio on this tour and for a total of 7 days.
His professionalism, enthusiasm and knowledge of his country is outstanding.

A wonderful day, travelling through this beautiful valley. The scenery was magnificent, the Inca sites, spectacular and the lunch stop at Don Angel Buffet gave us an opportunity to try some traditional Peruvian dishes, rather than "tourist fare". We also stopped at a women's weaving co-operative for an amazing demonstration of dyeing and weaving.
Our guide, Eduardo was knowledgeable and informative and he knew so many people along the way that he was able to give us a great experience.
The trip catered for all ages and walking (and climbing) abilities, so that some of us were able to go a little higher whilst other explored lower areas of Ollantaytambo and Pisaq.
All in all, a truly wonderful day.

This was a great day trip to the Sacred Valley. Marco Antonio was an great guide and always showed us the best way to see the sights while avoiding the crowds. Lunch was very good as well. We especially enjoyed the weaving demonstration.

We had an amazing time with Rene and Richard. Rene gave us an excellent background on Incan history and was very attentive to our needs and making sure we had a good time. I highly recommend the tour for anyone looking to get a good intro on the region.

Dani, my tour guide during the Sacred Valley tour, was hands down my favorite guide of all time!! Dani was incredibly knowledgeable, skilled and engaging while sharing info and history. He definitely has a gift as an educator/guide. English was superb! Very pleasant and enjoyable!
