Hidden Trails of Iceland

I was actually looking into a hiking tour in Nepal, when I came across Amarok Adventures' hiking/sailing trip in Faroe Islands and thought Faroes may be an even better place to get to know the company and its guides. It turned out to be a a fantastic experience. Both Alberto and Monica go beyond and above to make sure that all the participants of their tour have their own unique pleasures, without harming the group dynamics. I now notice that I actually joined their tour without having read any reviews, a bit like taking a leap of faith with Amarok Adventures. And it paid back incredibly. Having seen how Alberto and Monica operate, I wouldn't doubt joining another adventure of theirs in the future, be it Iceland, Patagonia or Nepal. I actually look forward to taking another trip with the lovely pair. Thank you for the lovely memories.

I just finished my second trip with Amarok Adventures. After a super amazing experience on the Hidden Trails of Iceland hike a couple years ago, I decided to join Albert and Monica and their local team on the Manaslu Circuit trek in Nepal. Starting at Machhakhola, we followed the mighty Budhi Gandaki River through many villages and across many suspension bridges, climbing steadily toward its source until it became just a trickle. We then went over Larke Pass (5106 m). The return trip took us down the equally stunning Marsyangdi River canyon. Almost every mile of the route was challenging, but every mile was worth it. From airport pickup through cultural and altitude acclimatizing to permits, meals and sleeping arrangements at the local tea houses along the way, everything was handled with care. Every step of the way I felt like I mattered. Like my previous experience with Amarok, our group of strangers became very good friends. What a wonderful experience! I’ve now thoroughly enjoyed two trips with Amarok Adventures and I am looking forward to a third soon.

"Beautiful, Challenging & Fun" - that is my best description of the "Hidden Trails of Iceland" hike that Amarok Adventures runs. I had seen some of the photos posted from previous hikers about this Iceland adventure by Amarok, but could not believe they were all real. But ... they were! Just an amazing place with landscapes that you won't find anywhere else in the world and can only experience by hiking deeper into the country that Amarok knows so well. Nothing really compares to a hike like this as there were 5 or 6 days on the "hidden trails" where we saw
no one - not one person - only hearing waterfalls, wind, and our fellow hikers. The scenery was only a part of what made this hike such a wonderful experience. What I was not expecting was the fun we had as a group during the hike. Maybe I was lucky to be with the people that I went on this hike with, but the people were fun to be around as well as allowing me to learn some new backpacking/hiking skills from those more experienced. As for the leader of our hike - Monica - I can't say enough good things. Here are a few - very skillful as a guide, patient with those less skilled in hiking, a great cook for all of us in the evenings, a caring doctor/nurse when needed, and an all-around great person to lead our group. Last comment would be a recommendation for those considering the hike. It is a hike for those with above average fitness and above average balance as the terrain will test you at times. All-in-all, an adventure with Amarok is one you will be glad you did!

As Albert mentioned during the introduction briefing, this hike might make one emotional…and I would agree!

The 10 day hike through the Highlands has left an indelible imprint on my heart and soul!

Iceland’s indescribable beauty, our fun group and the expert guidance offered by Albert made this such a memorable adventure! I loved hearing the folklore (Katla the witch), the delicious dinners after long (and a few wet) hikes and relaxing in the thermal pool after a cold stream crossing!

And Albert’s partner, Monica, was a fierce, but smooth “heavy equipment operator.” She handled the fast flowing rivers and streams while towing a large trailer like she was out for a stroll!

Many props to her and Albert for their exceptional planning, preparation and execution!

I’m thinking Greenland or the Faroe Islands might be in my future!

Thanks again for such a great challenge and experience!

When I booked this trip I knew I was going to get something special but in reality what I got was even better. From the moment we were picked up in Reykjavik, Monica, our guide made sure we were well looked after. I know I can't credit her with creating the awe inspiring sights we saw every day but I can for putting together a wonderful route through some of Icelands most amazing places. I'm home a month and still dreaming of the trip. Thank you Monica and Alberto for sharing Iceland's Hidden Trails with me.

This is my all time favourite trip…. A magical trip into the the Hidden Trails of Iceland. The scenery is breathtaking and no two days are the same. The logistics, the food, the communications and the lodgings were as described - no surprises. Monica and Alberto are passionate, knowledgeable and very experienced leaders and committed to ensuring everyone has an amazing experience. I will be travelling with Amarok Adventures again soon!!

Starting with Alberto guidance and cooking capabilities... together with a friendly and motivated group willing to discover the hidden trails and on top of this a fantastic weather (only 1 day with light rain), we were ready for the adventure. What a fantastic program! This is a must to better understand Iceland. Enjoy!

I'd been planning a hiking trip to the Icelandic Highlands for a number of years and all was on hold due to Covid. Therefore I had plenty of time to evaluate all options. I eventually chose Hidden Trails with Amarok Adventures. I found them through 57Hours.

The scenery was out of this world and it certainly met up to expectations given some of the things I'd already read. We were also very lucky with the weather. Our guide was Monica and she turned out to be key. Very knowledgeable, patient, caring and a great cook. I've not doubt that I'll be organizing another adventure "off-the-grid" with them some time next year.

Definitely highly recommended, although I would recommend a number of weeks training before you go.

This was a fantastic way to see the remote areas of Iceland. Hikers experience walking barefoot through moss fields, fording cold clear mountain streams, sleeping in historic mountain huts, and hiking for several days without seeing another person. The guides prepare delicious meals from Iceland products (seafood, vegetables, and mushrooms). The experienced guides are highly knowledgeable about the area and are well prepared for all circumstance.

What a fantastic experience! Monica is an amazing guide who loves to share her passion for the highlands of Iceland with the rest of the world. Small group sizes that allow for getting to know everyone on the tour and make new friendships with like-minded people. I will be dreaming of Iceland for a long time to come.
