Just finished the Road to Hana tour with our tour guide Justin. Justin MADE the tour! He kept our group (12 people from different parts of the USA) engaged for the whole 8.5hr trip! He is hilarious and has tons of knowledge about all things Hawaii. Beautiful scenery, good banana bread, pretty beach and great conversation …as Justin would say good times, good times”.

Our guide Malia was great. She has a great personality and made the trip more fun. It is a long day traveling, but the views were awesome and the information interesting. The actual road to Hana is not one for the meek. The experience was made greater because someone else, who knows the road, was doing the driving. Allowing us to sit back and take in the view

While the road to Hana is a wonderful experience, and I’m very glad we did it, I cannot recommend this particular tour company. In fact, rent a car and do it yourself. It’ll be a much better experience. The primary issue was our tour guide. As an initial matter, we were asked to rent a car to come meet the group at a Safeway. We didn’t have an issue with this even though upon purchase, pickup at the hotel was advertised. We were then given strict instructions that the van would be departing at 7:20. If we needed to use the restroom, get coffee etc, all needed to be done by then as it was leaving strictly on time. We made sure we did all of this prior to departure from our hotel, drove the 27 minutes to the Safeway and arrived right around 7:16. The van had not arrived. It did not arrive until 7:25. Then, our tour guide Heavenly still had to go to the grocery store to buy all of the food for the day. It was a bit odd. I previously did a tour where the breakfast was ready for us and our first stop was scenic and we were afforded the opportunity to eat our breakfast. Here, the sandwiches were handed to us and we ate them in the van as we drove. When we finally departed the store around 8am, the tour officially started. Heavenly constantly chit chatted with the lady she was training about every day gossip. Facebook posts, this person’s aunty, this person’s cousin etc. I know that she’s single - she’s on dating apps. I felt like I was in a soap opera. She and her friend talked about money so much. How much they make hourly doing this job. How much more money they need etc. Heavenly also sang endlessly. It was awful. I am not trying to be mean. But I really thought it was going to be a very cool journey and instead she just sang dumb songs with a terrible voice.

It felt like half of our stops were to chat with Heavenly’s friends. After being told lunch was provided and picking our sandwiches, Heavenly stopped and got a massive plate of bbq. We were all waiting in the van. She was waiting on this plate of food. Finally got back in the van with a massive open plate of food. The van just smelled like food. A piece of chicken fell on the floor and she said “no worries - it’ll be cat food.” Truly so gross. So the rest of the journey was spent with the van smelling like leftovers. And it was so weird that we were all waiting in the van for her.

Due to her being extremely late, we also got to our lunch stop at the black sand beach an hour late. Not being punctual stresses me out. She kept saying “I think they’ll be fine and let us on” but I paid a significant amount of money for this. So, it was ultimately fine but such a jarring and stressful experience.

Endless stories of her mom whom I’m sure is a sweet lady but I’ve never met this woman, and I don’t really care about her.

Overall, while there were bits and pieces that were cool, I just couldn’t handle the constant singing and chattering about nonsense. She said it’s her ADHD so I feel bad because I can understand. But, it was just not a great experience. I felt trapped most of the day.

You can do the road on your own - rent a car. Do what you want. It will be more enjoyable.

The Road to Hana tour which is a scenic drive that offers amazing views of rainforests, waterfalls, beaches and coastline. This highway is very narrow and windy and you pass over 50 bridges that are mostly one lane. We enjoyed stops at Pua’a Ka’a state park where the family swam at the base of a small waterfall. Stopped and got fresh coconuts. Enjoyed swimming at the black sand beach at Wai’anapanapa State Park. Stopped by Hana Farms and ending the tour watching over 40 sea turtles resting on the beach. Our tour guide, Christy was amazing with Dynamic Tours! She was a wealth of knowledge and made everyone feel like ohana.
