A true miracle that any nature lover must experience. Samaria Gorge is the longest gorge in Europe, measuring 16 km, giving you the opportunity to meet rare structures and species of the Cretan flora and fauna like the unique goat species named Kri-Kri that one can only find in Crete. Through a beautiful route among small traditional mountainous villages you reach Xyloskalo in the plateau of Omalos, the northern entrance of the gorge at an altitude of 1,250 m. As you keep walking you will pass from the “Sideroportes” (Iron doors) the narrowest point of Samaria, ending at the shores of the Libyan Sea in Agia Roumeli where you can definitely rest, eat and swim. It is exactly what you need! Apart from this, during your hike there are a lot of interesting historical points like the temple of Apollo, giving you a great combination of nature and Greek History.

The morning pick up was easy - we agreed on a corner close to our place and it took about an hour to get to the entrance. And it was an easy pick up to come home - just text to pick you up before you take the boat from Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakion.

We had a great time hiking the Samaria Gorge, and this private transfer made it possible even with our limited time in Chania. Great trip, great driver, and great communication in advance to set things up.

Nikos, the owner, was very responsive ahead of trip. And our driver was puntual, professional, and friendly.
The gorge itself is beautiful. It’s part of a national park so very well organized.
If you’re a fast hiker (it’s about 10-12 miles downhill) consider starting a couple hours later in day (though consider the temperature that day, later start means warmer) and shave a couple hours off waiting for the ferry at 17:30. While waiting, have lunch at Calypso, which has great food and service.

We wanted to do Samaria gorge before the crowds because we were traveling in high season and a very hot time of year, so we booked a private transfer with nikos tours. The driver came early, upon our request (5:30am!) and we got to the start of the hike just before it opened. The driver took turns very safely and made us feel very comfortable. Every bit of the day was seamless - he gave us water and even a parting gift! Thank you so so much!!

Nikos was fantastic! Even though he just drove us to and from Samaria Gorge, he felt like a tour guide. He shared so much knowledge about the area, wildlife, and culture of Crete. He was friendly, genuine, hospitable, and extremely accommodating. My family felt very safe with him driving, even through the steep, windy Cretan mountains! I highly recommend Nikos if you are looking for safety and a local’s perspective.

1st class service from Nikos, on arrival our driver was at the airport waiting, the car was spotless, we were offered water and the trip to our hotel was effortless , Nikos picked us up on our return to the airport and give us a great talk about the island, what a lovely guy, we will definitely be using again when we return!
