Naples is at once a sophisticated ancient metropolis littered with monuments of art and architecture, a city dramatically perched between Mount Vesuvius and the sea, a place of palaces, the hometown of pizza. But unlike many other Italian cities with such a formidable legacy, Naples is not an open-air museum. Shopkeepers, bakers, olive sorters, home cooks, vendors and the last traditional sign painter of the market are all part of the warm community we’ll be welcomed into. On this walk within and without the city walls, we’ll spend the day experiencing the everyday food traditions served up with the superlative hospitality that is the hallmark of the Neapolitano.

We had the most wonderful rambling stroll across Naples with Chiara, learning all about Naples and its history, discovering some of its neighborhoods, and, best of all, eating a bunch of delicious food: From seafood to pizza to fried vegetables to pasta and gelato, it was a great adventure. Chiara is very friendly, knowedgeable and a great conversationalist. She helped us make the most of our whirlwind couple of days in Naples.

Chiara was a delight and generous with her time. She appeared to know the area intimately from years of experience. A casual comment about something in our surroundings would elicit insightful commentary. There were so many interesting stories to share that we fell a little behind schedule in the last hour or so. But Chiara never rushed, encouraged us to make the most of each stop and extended the length of the tour well behind the scheduled end time so that we had almost all day with her. She took a genuine interest in all 4 of us, providing each of us with individualized recommendations for the rest of our stay. I especially appreciate the time we spent with the sign maker and the memento that I got to take with me. At each stop the local owners were outgoing and eager to interact with us. These personal connections are part of why I make it a point to schedule a CB tour any time I visit a city where they are offered.

I've done several CB tours over the years and this is one of the best ones if not the best tour I've been on. Not only was the food amazing but we visited a gentleman who hand paints signs for the markets and had a personalized sign made which is now a treasured keepsake. I highly recommend this tour but don't eat before! You will have plenty of wonderful treats to fill you up.

This was another terrific CB tour (never had a bad one yet!). Francesca was a great guide: friendly & knowledgeable. She showed us sights we hadn’t seen as well as great food and vendors. Really loved the Antica Freselleria stop with its history and video demonstration, and we enjoyed the unexpected hand painted signs by Pasquale de Stefano… a very unique stop! I highly recommend this tour…be prepared to be completely stuffed by the end!

Amazing tour that takes you into heart and soul of Napoli life! The tour gave us a true experience of food, culture and history. We loved being able to experience 6 and 7 generation family businesses. Highly recommend Culinary Backstreets.

Had an amazing experience sampling various Napolitan dishes with our fabulous guide Francesca. She was fun, informative and very helpful in assisting us to figure out how to navigate our way to various attractions. 5 hours flew by. What I particularly liked was visiting establishments that were historically generational. We tried many different dishses including: panina Napolitan, a sparkling wine made from the local grape varietal - falanghina, fresh buffalo mozzarella, freselleria (capolata and marrazzara), local red wine made from the varietal Agliano, frittatina (fried pasta) - delicious!, deep fried zucchini flower stuffed with ricotta and provola, and of course, margherita pizza. It was a good thing we walked for a good part of the 5 hours to compensate for the food we ate. Although more expensive than other food tours offered, this truly was a backstree tour of smaller, out of the way venues. Highly recommended!!!

We absolutely loved this tour. It took us off the beaten track, away from the high-tourist areas and into neighborhoods that gave us a glimpse of "every day" Naples and its rich history and traditions. Our guide, Chiara, gave our group not only a historical education but also a deep appreciation of traditional Neapolitan food. We were initially concerned that our not quite 6 year-old grandson would find the tour difficult. How wrong we were! He thoroughly enjoyed it and ate all the offerings (well... minus the delicious cod carpaccio, which was OK since we gladly devoured his share)!
We highly recommend this tour!

This was easily the best food tour we have ever taken. The food purveyors we visited were both top notch and totally authentic and almost all family owned for generations. In most cases we interacted with the family members, got to meet them and ask questions as well as tasting their delicious culinary delights.

Our guide, Francesca, was so knowledgeable and as a Naples native knew so much about the city. She not only brought us to the best places and explained all the food in great detail but also gave us so much information on Naples in general including many recommendations on what to see after the tour and where to eat on our own.

Worth every penny and can't wait to take another tour with this fantastic company the next time we are in a city where they offer one

Our guide Chiara is very charming. She took us to many small, owner-managed restaurants that we would never have discovered without her. We ate and drank veeery well! And we got to know the real Naples.
