Whilst the experience of arriving by public transport & visiting the bamboo Forrest area is recommended, we were very disappointed by the lack of English proficiency of our kindly guide.

This was the only tour remaining by the time we made a last minute decision to book a tour rather than navigate Arashiyama on our own and while it was convenient to have someone pre-purchase our train and park entry tickets, I would not recommend this tour to a friend. There was a reason there were still spots left on this tour and I'll remind myself to take the reviews more seriously when booking Arashiyama tours next time. English-proficient is a better description of our tour guide's language capability...he was polite but did not have much knowledge of the local history that he could explain to us. Had I known beforehand, I would have downloaded some audio tours rather than depend on the tour guide. This tour does not include any tea ceremonies and it was too windy so that boat cruise was cancelled and we were only told this when we started. There is no time to enter the temple with botanical grounds only time to walk through them quickly. I would have much preferred to enter the temple in lieu of the boat cruise rather than the cultural museum tour of karuta card game.

Great tour. Sachiko was our guide - very informative and easy to understand. She gave a good with information on what we were seeing but also included personal stories and insights.
We chose to go to the monkey park at the end of the tour instead of heading back with the group. She made sure to give us directions to the park as well as lunch options.

Our guide Jun, was very knowledgeable and interesting. I enjoyed walking through the bamboo forest and visiting the temples. I would recommend this tour, though it was very hot in August 2023.

Donna was a delightful tour guide. Gave enough information and guidance but also encouraged you to explore areas on your own. Great guide and lovely places to see. All places we would not have experienced had we not booked this tour. Thank you again

It’s really fresh atmosphere, bamboo trees are green, but may bot green as photo on google. We are enjoyable to walk and sightseeing and taking photos.
But some nice streets are banned to come in. We have to go on the main street only.

My wife and I were so excited for this as sightseeing in this area is the highlight of Kyoto. We arrived at the departure point @8:35 am and departure was @8:40 am. The was no one there and we waited for 1 hour but no one showed up to take us. I tried calling the operator and txted him on the app but no answer. I asked around for the tour name in the hotel but no one can tell me where it is or if they have seen them at all... they don’t want to refund me the money either.

My wife and I went by ourselves and rented bikes and saw all the temples and bambo forest and the monkey park.. Honestly don’t waste your money on a flaky tour when you can see everything by yourself or book another tour.. all other tours were booked at the time I made reservations so that just means this is the worst one. I should’ve took the hint!

We decided to do the walking tour because we have not been to this area of Kyoto before and thought it would be a good introduction to the area and to honest I am on the fence if it was worth the money. If I am being honest I do not feel like I learnt anything and I felt that I was just moved around from place to place. I kind of feel like everyone else was on a different tour from me.

To help others here is a pros and cons list:

Pros:
I went to two temples that I probably would have not visited unless we had the tour guide.
Train fair is included (however we did have a JR pass)
We went in the morning so we got good pictures
The tour guide was lovely
I learnt a bit about each temple.

Cons:
- Felt a bit rushed
- I felt that the context and structure was holding the tour guide back
- I do not feel like I learnt anything really about the area and the history.
- The guides are not allowed to guide inside the temple area.
- It would have been nice with the second temple if we would of had access to the hall.
- We got taken to the bridge but there was no explanation about the bridge and we had to use google and do our own research about its importance.
- I dont know if it was the heat but I did not feel peace except for at the Jojakko-ji temple.
- The second Zen temple felt very packed and the energy was very confused.
The guide told us how to get to the station but no more gudiance about the area.
- I felt that because we where running slightly behind and part of our tour group had the lunch cruise booked then the guide was more interested in ensuring they made that on time.

I dont know if its because my expectations where a bit high because of all the previous reviews being so great but I feel like the guide even though she was lovely she was just a chaperone to get us from A to B to C.

I guess I expected the tour to be an introduction to the area and then from there we could spend more time in the area and experience a few more things and I dont feel that I got that. I dont feel that I understood the are and why it was there and why it was important like why are the bamboo groves there and not in another area of Kyoto.
