Watch Japan’s unique and traditional sport Sumo with a knowledgeable tour guide.
If you are in Tokyo in January, March or September, you should not miss it!(the tournaments take place 6 times a year; 3 times in Tokyo, once in Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka respectively. Each tournament lasts for 15 days. )

Meet your English speaking guide at the JR Ryogoku station and walk to the stadium(2mins walk). Your guide will talk you through what is Sumo, its history and rules before entering the stadium and give you additional tips in between the bouts.

Feel the intense, serious atmosphere of the tournament while you are free to grab some beer, Yakitori(skewers), etc.. at the vendor inside the stadium and eat/drink at your seat. *Food and drinks are not included in this tour.

We had a great time with Yuco as our guide. She's a fan and had several handouts to help us understand the tournament and was incredibly knowledgeable about the tournament and rules. Wonderful experience.

The joining instructions were clear and a helpful person who pointed out the correct tour guide for the group I was assigned to. Our guide was very knowledgable about the sumo history and showed us around displays at the sumo museum quickly. As it was the final day of the tournament it was extremely busy and our guide was careful to keep the group together and guide us to our assigned seats in the Ryokogu Stadium.

The stadium was awesome and pretty packed. Our guide was open to answering any questions asked, explaining how the bouts were organised. It was a highly charged and exciting atmosphere and I was fascinated by it all and learned a lot. This is something definitely worth attending when the opportunity arises to get a feel for the prevailing ancient culture of Japan. I enjoyed it very much.

Had a really great time - I knew nothing about sumo prior to going but left the event a fan! The guide, Noriko, spoke great English was really knowledgeable and was able to answer the groups questions and explain the traditions and rules so we all understood what was happening. The atmosphere in the room was great and even our tour group, which was 100% non-Japanese, was really getting into it and rooting for the fighters.

The seats were quite high up but ultimately it made no difference as it was easy to see what was happening.

I joined a sumo tournament tour because of my partner who wanted to have the experience. I was not looking forward to paying a lot of money and spending several hours in a stadium watching sumo instead of exploring Tokyo. My plan was to see a few matches and leave after an hour max. Oh noy was I wrong. Our guides explained every single detail of the sumo world from the significance of their clothing and hairstyles to their lifestyles and rankings. Their enthousiasm was contagious and I was immediately drawn into this fascinating world, remaining in my seat the entire time, refusing to leave even to get drinks and being sad when the tournament day was over. After coming home I started researching everything sumo related and next day followed the matches online. I know that without our amazing tour guides I never would have enjoyed or appreciated the sumo as I did. This experience turned into an absolute highlight of my entire three week trip to Japan.

My family thoroughly enjoyed the Tokyo Sumo Wrestling Tournament in large part because of the background information our guide, Yoko, provided us. She explained the rituals, histories of the wrestlers, and results of the tournament’s previous matches. Yoko really knew her stuff! Thanks for making our experience a memorable one!!

Taka was wonderful! She gave a good rundown of the rules of sumo and pointed out notable rikishi (oldest, youngest, tallest, etc.) through the day. The seats were great and the meetup process was smooth.

Sumo was great but was incensed at having to buy through a third party who obviously employ people to bulk buy every available ticket, in the middle of the night, and sell them on with a huge mark-up. We paid £177 for 2 tickets with a face value of less than £18 each. We only paid as, along with many others, this would be our only opportunity to ever see live sumo; these agents take advantage of that fact. The "experience" involved 5 minutes in the sumo museum and then being shown various pictures from a folder, in which none of us had any interest. Obviously an attempt to justify the cost.
