Our Welcome Joburg Walking Tour is perfectly positioned as a short and easy walk, providing a thorough introduction to Johannesburg.

If you are pressed for time or simply do not want to walk too far, then our Welcome Joburg Walking Tour is perfect for you. Only two hours and slightly more than 1km, it will give you all the background insight to make the most of your visit to this astonishing city (and to South Africa as a country).

The tour focuses on the historical background from ancient and pre-colonial times, up till the formation of South Africa as a country in 1910. It explains how Johannesburg came into being without delving into recent history. It answers the fundamental questions of where you are and leaves you inspired about how complex and diverse South Africa is as a country.

It is an exceptional storytelling experience, guided by Charlie Moyo with his exceptional, deep, velvety voice who the New York Times called a storyteller extraordinaire!

We booked direct with Local Places, so we had a version of this tour with Charlie that focused on the story of Johannesburg through immigration and food by visiting various ethnic neighborhoods, restaurants and shops.
It was a great tour - the only problem was that we ate so much (at our own cost) by the time we reached our favorite areas - Ethiopian and Portuguese, we just couldn't eat another bite!
If we had another day, we would have taken a tour we hadn't seen online of 'Charlie's favorite places' which probably would have included some of these as well.
Unlike many tourist-oriented tour companies where they point out sites with a basic explanation - Local Places presents a 'story-telling' format where you receive the 'full story' with extensive background, historical detail and its impact not just on South Africa, but also the rest of the world.
Sometimes you can be a bit overwhelmed by dates and names, but it soon becomes helpful when cross-referencing other aspects of life that the events set in motion.
As an example of what you'll experience with Local Places - my traveling companion's favorite moment in Johannesburg (he's normally not very adventurous), was the point on the tour when Charlie let us high upstairs through the commotion of a multi-level building full of Ethiopian shops, businesses and restaurants for Ethiopian coffee with cardamon - and then led us up some steps, outside an open window onto the ledge of a building overlooking the bustling street below for our most memorable view of the day. With Local Places, you have a unique and personal experience and perspective that you would never receive on a typical tour or 'hop on, hop off' bus. This is more expensive - but worth it... after all, if you're only going to visit Johannesburg once in a lifetime, you might as well have a 'tour of a lifetime'.
Highly Recommended! Thanks Charlie!

While I have spent a lot of time in inner city Johannesburg in recent years this tour felt unique and involved walking in diverse areas of historical and cultural significance. Charlie is both an exceptional tour guide and eloquent storyteller with a wealth of knowledge about the history of Johannesburg. I strongly recommend this and other tours with Joburg Places.
