Museum. Hector Pieterson has become something of an iconic image of the fateful day, mostly due to the photograph published across the globe. Today, June 16 is the National Youth Day to honor Hector Pieterson and the then young people who fought against apartheid rule. A memorial dedicated to one of the fallen heroes not be missed.

Our tour (March 5th, 2024) was a great window into the lives of people in Johannesburg and Soweto…our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the history, politics and living situations of the citizens here. The disparity between the very wealthy and those living in extreme poverty is shocking and eye opening. The politics and history of apartheid resulting in the Freedom Charter is both fascinating and appalling to those of us who live very privileged lives worlds away. Excellent experience!

The entire tours of Johannesburg and Soweto were fabulous! Our guide James has an overwhelming amount of knowledge of the two. His personal knowledge of the people, culture, history and languages just blew us away. It also helped that he knew so many people along those routes. We really felt comfortable with him and he did everything that we asked of him. What a wonderful host. From the moment he saw us, we were like family. Very professional and conscientious about the work he does and he wants everyone to take a wealth of knowledge back to their homes. James, thanks for the experience of a life time. We will return to South Africa because of you.

We were on a half day tour of Johannesburg and Soweto. Our guide, James, was phenomenal and exceptionally knowledgeable. He didn’t just speak facts but he told stories and offered insight into the past as well as the present. Conversation with James was often light but also deep. At times we laughed and other times we were moved to tears. Anyone who has the opportunity to take this tour with James is extremely fortunate. He will forever be in our hearts.

We really enjoyed this tour. Our guide paschal was very knowledgeable about the city of Johannesburg and we learned a lot about the history of South Africa. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone !
