What a great experience! I went solo, and I enjoyed the personalized attention. Instead of making just one scarf, I made three. The exhibition on the second floor is stunning and worth visiting. This was a perfect and relaxing way for me to start my last full day visiting Japan.

Kenji and his staff are just wonderful. Making our scarves was fun and the museum upstairs included a movie on the process plus the most beautiful art. If I return to Kyoto I will definitely visit again.

5 years ago, I visited Kyoto Shibori Museum and had a memorable experience, so when I brought friends from CA to visit for their first Japan trip, I definitely added this shibori scarf experience. As expected, they thoroughly enjoyed it! More over, they were in awe of learning about the process of making the many kinds of shibori on the informative video and seeing the many masterpieces in the upatairs museum. They developed such appreciation for the intricate work in doing some styles of shibori.
My friend purchased a beautiful leather and shibori purse and said she will treasure the hard work that went into making it.
Before leaving, I shared the story if my daughter's experience 5 years ago, and that she had recently married. The "cute grandpa" as she called him back then, gifted her with a shibori "lucky ball: charm to commemorate her marriage. Upon my return, I gave.it to her and she was touched by his kindness.
She's possibly returning to Japan in December and taking the shibori scarf class will be on their itinerary.

If you love textiles and making beautiful things, this class is for you! Our group of 6 easily booked the Itajime Shibori Scarf Class with the online request form. The response was immediate, even after the Museum was closed. I requested the class to be taught in English - no problem! I was even able to add our 6th guest at the last minute since the family owned business is so responsive.
We were shown a variety of patterns and colors to choose from and were helped thoroughly for each step. The excitement was incredible when the finished scarf was revelead, quite a memorable souvenir.
While the scarves were drying, we viewed the small museum that was filled with incredible shibori artwork. There is also a gift shop with a nice price range of beautiful shibori clothing, scarves, accessories and purse.
The Yoshioka Family was there on staff to welcome and assist us. Their hospitality was a highlight along with the beautiful artwork the family has produced for several generations!
