They were wealthy and well-educated, physicians, traders, ship-owners, but second-class citizens at the same time. They founded a synagogue in the rigid Roman-Catholic city, today one of the oldest existing in Europe where they proudly exhibit its own heritage in the first Jewish museum opened in this region.
The focus is on the whereabouts of the Jewish community in Dubrovnik Old Town, from the 14th c until today. From the Jewish fountain at the Pile plateau, over stone fragments in the northern part of the city to the Jewish street where a ghetto was formed in the 16th c, it evokes the life of Jews in Dubrovnik.
The neglect of religion and nationality marked a more recent history of the former communist state and left an impact on the Jewish community in Dubrovnik.
Today just a small number of Jews live in the city, but still they are prominent, influential, educated and successful. They proudly keep remainders of their ancestors.

While there are not many Jews still living in the area we do have a presance in other parts of Croatia.. In the old city our area is preserved and this tour showed and explained so many great things. Tis is a must for any Jew and non Jew to see our heratige and experiance an old synagogue

Fabulous tour with Vesna. We were a family of 6, age range 22-70, and we all thoroughly enjoyed the tour and learned so much about the rather unique Jewish Dubrovnik history. Vesna was so knowledgeable and just so very lovely-
I highly recommend this tour.

What a treat to spend two hours with Vesna on our walking tour of Jewish Dubrovnik. We learned so much about the history of Croatia as well as of the Jewish history and Sephardic Jews of Croatia. Ideally we’d have chosen a longer tour as she has so much to offer, is happy to answer our questions about the subject matter and Croatian culture, and so skilled at sharing her knowledge in an easy to understand way. Vesna also accommodated a last minute schedule change with us. I can see why all the reviews were so positive. We definitely recommend Walking with Vesna. Thank you!

Excellent, interesting tour with a gracious and knowledgeable historian, Maty Singer, Ph.D. It was a highlight of our trip. We met at 8:30 AM before the crowds grew and it got warmer.

The tour gave a comprehensive overview of the history of Dubrovnik and its Jewish community. Vesna is a very knowledgeable guide. She placed the Jewish presence in the city in the context of the latter’s turbulent history.
The tour included a walk through parts of the old city, including current and former sites associated with the Jewish community. The tour concluded at the active synagogue and small museum of Jewish artifacts.
This is a worthwhile tour for anyone interested in understanding the long and complicated history of Jewish life in Dubrovnik, and more generally in the Adriatic littoral.

Do yourself a favor and enjoy an informative Jewish Heritage tour with Vesna!
She was waiting for us outside the Pile gate with our name on a sign. We did a very easy loop, ending at the Jewish synagogue which also has a small museum. We’re so glad we did the tour with Vesna. 😊
