My wife and I arrived in Bora Bora on the afternoon flight after a long journey. Thinking it would be a great introduction to the island, and its inhabitants, we chose the Legend, Storytelling and Stargazing tour as our very first activity on the first evening of our honeymoon.

Running in our flip flops, stye-eyed and weary we reached Tau (our guide) out of breath. It was a tight schedule to take the ferry from the airport at 430 and make our rendezvous for 5. We were late, and apologetic. It didn't matter. Tau was kind, perceptive, caring and humorous. It felt like we met somebody that we already knew. "My grandfather named me Tau after himself" he said "that name, Tau, means 'Chill" -as in calm.

Tau said he made the hat he was wearing like his grandfather did from palm leaves. "I've been wearing it for 2 months." He said proudly. "That's pretty good." We joked around for a while. Piloting through the lagoon with ease, he sang Bob Marley and Opetaie Foa'i. He played Ukulele, and fed us tuna and coconut.

He told us about the Islands; Taha'a, where he was born, Raiatea, the home of the gods, Hawaii, Tonga, Fiji, and of course Bora Bora. Recounting family legends he outlined his place in the world, the nature of coconuts, eels, and crabs and all manner of things. He built us a fire, and we roasted marshmallows. We asked all the questions we could. What it is to be good, and kind.

It was overcast, and a lousy night for stargazing -but that did not matter either. It was magical, and it shaped our experience on the island. We were dog tired, but sad to say good bye that night. Through the rest of our trip, we proudly used the Tahitian words and phrases he taught us, and we learned new ones on the way.

About a week later we went snorkeling at the "Coral Garden." Looking down at the fish, Tania saw a man sitting on the bottom 3 meters down. It seemed as though he didn't need to breath. Eventually, he came up for air. It was Tau. Not kidding. As if summoned from the ocean for another greeting. He showed Tania through the coral, found us sea-horses, and other fish that he said made his belly grumble. It was hugs, and laughs and smiles. Like an old friend.

Tau, we are so happy to have met you. Thank you for your kindness. We will be back.

Mauruuru Roa Prahata.

With Love from Newfoundland and Labrador,
Oliver and Tania

P.S. If we didn't make it really obvious, you should book this adventure and ask for Tau.

My Wife and I did this on our honeymoon December 2023.
Our captain, Coco, was absolutely fantastic. He first toured us around the lagoon and showed us many of the points of interest around the main island and motus. All throughout or cruise we had drinks and he sang and played ukulele. We watched the sunset near the barrier reef and then made our way to the private island. We sat and listened to the stories of Polynesian exploration all while snacking, drinking, and stargazing. Our cruise back to our resort was equally as breathtaking as we sat on the bow and the stars lit up the night sky.
This was easily our favorite adventure in Bora Bora. Do not hesitate to book this unique experience!

We recently just got to bora bora and booked our activities for the week through our hotel. We booked the stargazing experience for our second night since we figured it would be a great start to our trip traveling with our kiddos. This is a private tour, so it was just us and our two kids.

Our adventure started with Captain Mike picking us up from our hotel and we stopped in front of the main bora bora island where he shared the history of the island including pointing out the canon, the bunker, and the cave. We then traveled to a private Motu to watch the gorgeous sunset and my kids found some coconuts. At night, Mike setup the campfire with great apps, drinks, and of course marshmallows for the kids. He then shared the legend of the coconut tree and how it came to be with Hina and the eel king. He also showed our kids how to open the coconuts with a sharp stick. We ended the night staring at the gorgeous stars on the boat. We never see this many stars in the city! It was a gorgeous night and an amazing experience. We would definitely recommend!

Captain Mike made this the best experience!! We loved getting to learn about the history, myths, and culture of Polynesia.

To begin, Captain Mike brought us near the main island of Bora Bora where he pointed out a cannon and explained Bora Bora’s involvement in WWII. Then, he guided us to the middle of the lagoon to get a perfect view of the sunset, which we watched while he played a song on his ukelele. After, we went to the private Motu, where Captain Mike built us a beach-side fire, hand weaved a purse from palm leaves, and told us all about Polynesian legends and traditions. He was so knowledgeable!! When we asked him how he learned all of it, he said, “you have to listen to the old people. Your grandparents. They know a lot, we just have to listen.” What a great lesson for all of us.

When the sky was dark, we got back on the boat and drove to the middle of the lagoon for unimpeded star gazing. Captain Mike pointed out various constellations and told more stories about how the stars guided the Polynesian people from island to island and what meanings stars have in Polynesian religion and culture. He played us another song on his Ukelele and then explained the meaning of the song (a beautiful story about how Cassiopeia came to be).

We ended the night by laying on the front of the boat and star gazing while Captain Mike brought us back to our hotel.

Throughout the night, we were offered various snacks and drinks. Captain Mike was so welcoming, funny, and knowledgeable. We will absolutely do this again when we return to Bora Bora.

The Stargazing evening boat ride was one of our most memorable moments during our honeymoon and trip to French Polynesia. Mac was an incredible captain: friendly, personable, in tune with our style, and knowledgeable. We asked lots of questions and had a great dialogue, and learned so much about the history, culture and constellations. This was one of the most unique things we did and are so glad. Highly recommend!

Ask for, be on time with, and tip well Captain Mike! What a beautiful and rare experience. Captain Mike was there early, offered many insights as a native of the island, and had stories as well as answers to so many questions about the region, its culture, and history. He spoke artfully about the stars and how they were used for navigation as well as showed off the seldom seen places that are simply unforgettable. He provided such a singular experience that you simply won’t get on a massive tour boat.
