I completed the 2D Ausangate/Rainbow Mountain/Red Valley trek and cannot recommend it enough! Our guide, Alex, was one of the best guides I’ve had while doing treks. He was attentive, patient and incredibly friendly which made our small hiking group feel comfortable and cared for. The trail climbs up moderately but factoring in the altitude, it may be considered more challenging. I would highly recommend getting well acclimated before this trip because it will give your lungs a workout!
We reached Puka Pass which gives you a breathtaking view of Ausangate and the ridge. I had to walk back down the path and back up just to experience it again! The whole trail from beginning to end was beautiful, dotted with alpacas on the hillside and trails.
We were asked the evening before what time we wanted to start our hike for Rainbow Mountain which was nice that there was flexibility and we can depart at a time we all agreed upon. I arrived at the viewpoint around 7am to only one other group, and if you know how popular this spot is, you know that’s rare! I would recommend getting there early to enjoy the views in a more quiet setting before the hoards of tourists show up.
I do want to praise the meals we had on our trek! Denis, our fabulous chef, made the most delicious meals! I didn’t have much expectation since we were hiking, but my goodness, if I wasn’t hiking, I could have eaten it all! The portions were generous, hot and delicious.
If you are a hiker and want to experience more of what this beautiful land has to offer other than just Rainbow Mountain, definitely consider Salkantay Trekking for your trip! I wish I booked more treks with them on my trip to Peru because of the ease of communication, booking and coordinating with their team (shoutout to Emily who helped me out). Even payment was easy through their portal. 100% would go with Salkantay Trekking again!

The two day Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain trek with Salkatay was amazing, thanks to our guide Teo, as well as our chef Roberto. Teo is an excellent guide who was very knowledgeable about Inka traditions, modern Quechua culture, and local geology and biology. The food was plentiful, culturally relevant and delicious - the best I've ever had while out in the wilderness. They also looked after our health and safety, especially regarding high altitude adventure.

Rainbow mountain had incredible views! Our tour guide, Alexis, was amazing. He was knowledgeable and open to share info about Peru, Incas, the mountain and more! He also went at the perfect pace- not too fast, not too slow.

Our Ausangate trek to Rainbow Mountain was an incredible experience from start to finish. The tour offered breathtaking scenery, delicious food, and excellent service throughout.
Our guide Henry was not only helpful but also incredibly knowledgeable. He provided us with insightful explanations about the tour, local medicinal plants, and the way of life of the indigenous communities along our hike. This added a deeper understanding and appreciation for the region.
One highlight was the culinary expertise of our chef, Guido. Despite my wife being vegetarian and myself eating everything, Guido prepared delicious dishes that catered to both of our preferences, showcasing his skill and versatility.
Furthermore, Jorge, our driver, was excellent. His expertise and careful driving made us feel safe and comfortable throughout the long journey over the Andean mountains.
Overall, the Ausangate trek to Rainbow Mountain was a memorable and enriching experience, thanks to the stunning landscapes, delicious food, knowledgeable guide, and attentive service. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a rewarding adventure in Peru.
While our Ausangate trek to Rainbow Mountain was overall a great experience, I do have a suggestion for improvement regarding weather tracking. It would be beneficial for the company to provide more detailed information about the weather conditions that travelers can expect. Although we were informed about the cold and rain, we were not prepared for snow, which significantly impacted our experience .
I want to highlight Emily from the operations office, who played a crucial role in assisting me throughout the entire process. Her excellent communication, prompt responses to my inquiries, and smooth handling of the payment process were instrumental in choosing this company.

Breathtaking landscapes!!! Guide Eder was super attentive, he introduced us to everything with a lot of knowledge. I highly recommend the tour, the place is clean and the food is wonderful.

Freddy (our guide) is a phenomenon. The landscape is unique and the views reminiscent of Mars, especially the red valley. The fact that we arrived in Vinicunca earlier than the other tour groups is great as it gives us the opportunity to explore with fewer people. But above all, Freddy and his group were the jewel of the experience. He is very intelligent and gives context to the views and the environment. This helps in appreciating the entire trek even more.

I had the privilege of doing two 2-day trips with Porfi from Salkantay. Words can’t express how impressed I am with Porfi as a human being. He was attentive, kind, understanding and professional. Salkantay staff for both tours were outstanding to say the least. The chef and the horseman worked unbelievably hard to make memorable experiences for strangers. Thank you again and again.
