Get to know the medieval Golden Age and rough times of the People of the Book by walking along the old alleys and streets of Porto, and knowing the true Dark Ages where the Sephardi Jews lived.
Following a chronological line, the lifetime of the Jews in the Iberian Peninsula was made of ups and downs, this 3 hours walking tour encompasses their story, life and ancient remnants in Porto. Start your tour at the Cathedral’s old quarter and visit the street where one of the synagogues was located. Afterwards, move to the Miragaia quarter and notice that the people of the Great Diaspora tried to adapt to the Christians’ lifestyle by working alongside with them, with a huge proximity to the river Douro. Then, the Olive Field quarter was one of the ultimate Jewish urban phenomenon, with a few traces from the past and the chance to admire the memorial tablet referring about the 1496 Expelling Order by the king Manuel I.

André, the guide tour, was extremely engaging and knowledgeable. I myself am a history lover and was curious to learn more about the Jewish history of the city. It was wonderful to walk around the old streets, and seeing them in a different once I heard their stories. André had an answer to all of my questions and also was kind enough to provide tips for nice places to eat, more things to see in the city etc. I highly recommend this tour, and thank you André.

We did this tour on March 26. Andre our guide was great and very passionate about the jewish history of the city and Portugal. Although there are not many remnants of that era to see today he pointed out to some of the signs that remain today that show what happened there once. He was very knowledgeable and easy going. Highly recommended.
