Isla Saona is not only a beautiful natural place, but it also has a very interesting history. For the Taínos, indigenous inhabitants of the island, it was called Adamanay. It was later, with the arrival of Christopher Columbus, when the island was renamed Bella Savonesa in honor of Michele da Cuneo, a native of the city of Savona, in Italy.
Here you can also find the famous Cotubanamá cave, in which the Taino chief who bore this name was executed. Today it is another of the island's tourist centers.
Saona is a movie island, and in the literal sense of the word. Some scenes from the film Pirates of the Caribbean were shot here. But if a movie forever marked Isla Saona, that was Blue Lagoon, El Lago Azul in Spanish. Thanks to the fact that it was filmed in these landscapes, thousands of people discovered Saona Island through the big screen.

Entertaining boat ride (multiple changes of boat s each way). There was use of a ladder to get into the water and out. I am a very large woman and was worried that there would be difficulty using a ladder than a walk into or across option for boarding. Fortunately, the ladders were not just vertical, they were more like metal steps and there were rails. There was an opportunity to go into the water from the boat but I chose not to do that as a couple of people seemed to struggle on the bottom steps when not touching the sand. Overall, good experience, loud but energetic music , dancing crew and great memories!
Please keep in mind that these tours are compiled of many steps and pieces. My husband calls it “organized chaos.”. You may be picked up by one bus then be sent off on another bus. It may seem a little scary or sketchy at first, but it really is the Dominican way. If you have ever traveled to Thailand, the Middle East, China, or several other touristy places which have local populations dependent on bartering for services.
Recommendations: bring lots of sunscreen, bring hand sanitizer, always have some toilet tissue with you & a small bottle of liquid soap or soap sheets.

Fabulous day out and not in any way marred by adverse weather conditions. Beautiful natural pool, stunning island and great service from everyone involved. Would highly recommend this trip.

The tour was excellent. The driver was amiable and professional, and the tour guide and photographer were excellent. I’m giving four stars because of the long time it takes to start the activities, 30 minutes at the Sand bar is a short time to enjoy, and I think 1 hr will make a big difference, the food was ok, it could be better. The drinks are limited to coca and run, water, or soda.

Excellent time!!! We got picked up at our hotel and taken to a port from where a boat took us to Saona. There we had the provided lunch and free time to enjoy the island and the beach. A pleasant surprise was the fact that we had beach chairs waiting for us without having to hunt for them all over the beach. On our way back, we had a catamaran ride with music and dancing. The whole trip was a lot of fun, made especially so by the great service we received from the super friendly guide who made sure that everyone is well taken care of without being overly bossy like on some other excursions. Definitely recommend!!!

The trip was lovely. ONLY thing was they cramped the bus full and that was not good - it was a small van with small seats and every one was occupied. Also windows did not open which made it super claustrophobic - if they change that, the trip was wonderful and lovely.
