WHAT TO EXPECT
1.
The departure at 08:00 from the overnight hotel includes a journey to Matera of about 4 hours.
2.
Piazza Vittorio Veneto is generally the starting point of all tourist tours, it is the main square of Matera.
From here you can immediately admire the Sassi from one of the most evocative viewpoints in the city. And if you are lucky, you will also be accompanied by the notes of a friendly street pianist.
In addition, without you realizing it, you will already be walking over one of the largest caves in Matera. In fact, you must know that the vault of this cavity is the same floor as Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
Under the white paving there are three wonders of Matera: the Palombaro Lungo, MateraSum and the 19th hole. These are impressive locations that I suggest you visit at the end of your walk in the Sassi.
3.
Afterwards, you will visit the famous city of the Sassi which has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Excavated and built close to the Gravina di Matera, the Sassi di Matera, districts that make up the ancient part of the city, spread out in two valleys separated from each other by the rocky spur of the Civita.
4.
The Cathedral is dedicated to the SS. Madonna della Bruna and Sant'Eustacchio and is located in the highest part of Matera. Easy to reach on foot, it houses a precious image of the Madonna della Bruna to which the people of Matera are very devoted. For entry, the purchase of a €1.00 ticket is required.
5.
You may have noticed that a huge rock stands in the center of the Sassi district. This small mountain is also easily recognizable by the iron cross that stands out on its top. Under that cross there is a rock church or the Church of Santa Maria di Idris, one of the most beautiful in Matera also thanks to the precious Byzantine frescoes it houses. Entering this church is a good start to gradually enter the beautiful depths of the city. There is an entrance fee and sometimes there can be a wait due to the crowds.
6.
For the return you will be accompanied to the respective hotel where you will stay overnight. The return journey will take approximately 4 hours.
