June 27th, 2024-Was my last full day in Santo Domingo and I had decided to tryout Urbano Tours. Let me just say as a single female traveling, I always have to be super aware, I felt safe the entire time and thoroughly enjoyed ALL of this tour. Juan was super prompt and organized. The meeting spot was on the Rio Ozama River. I met Juan Garcia, the owner and one of the other tour guides, Joel Padilla. We first visited with a few fishermen. We walked and talked and he told me about the neighborhood. We talked about everything from global warming, to littering, to politics to education, etc. We also used the car along with walking. From a local baseball field & to a very big bridge called "El puente de la 17." to a nice skateboard park, a beautifully kept up soccer field right next to there, under the bridge.
We then walked to Escuela San Rafael De Las Guandules, which I think is a public school.
Then Juan drove us to the local market where we walked through the market, which consisted of both farmers' markets, meat markets, and flea market things. While there, Joel introduced me to lots of people. As we walked by another store, they were playing bachata music and I danced with the store owner.
We then made our way down the streets and through the neighborhood to get Dominican Ice Cream from a local house. We then walked to a home where she made empanadas all day for people. So good!
The last part, but longer part of the tour was to walk to the cable cars & then metro. We rode over the top of the city & then we jumped on the subway/metro to the end of the tour. It was awesome being able to travel and see all of the different things you wouldn't if you were walking, in a taxi or motorbike, on a bus, etc.
I'm sure Joel thought that was the end of his time with me, but my phone service had other plans. All phone providers were having issues with international calls/data/texting. So, he wanted to make sure I made it safely back to my hotel, so he rode with me on the motorbike to my hotel. I can't tell you how much I appreciated him doing that! I will definitely recommend and go and do this tour again!!

One of the best immersion experiences ever on a vacation. For those looking for something other than the typical tourist attraction destinations this is a must. Juan is a historian with a wealth of knowledge of the surrounding area. Our tour felt like two buddies strolling through the hood interacting with the locals, who are all friendly and warm, including Florita who made us a delicious authentic Dominican breakfast. Juan gave me the history of the town he grew up in, the country, and Columbus. Thoroughly enjoyed it and learned so much along the way. BTW, the mangos and zapotes I bought from the fruit stands were outstanding. Thanks, Juan!

This was the single best thing I did with my 3 days in Santo Domingo. The tour is very well thought out to give a succinct view of the average life of the regular people. You visit every location advertised and more depending on the flow of the day. Your guide Juan is a wealth of information about both ancient and modern history and the culture of both. Take some time to talk with him about anything that interests you and he will give his honest opinion. If he offers additional services know that they are worth and they support the local economy, such as the bridge boat tour.

I look forward to trying another one of their tours when I visit again.

Juan‘s got the right idea. I think amongst the many SD tours available which mainly show you the colonial zone, this experience is the only one out there like it so far. I’m a solo female traveller and wanted to see some Dominican life outside the touristic centre. I’m glad I did sign up, it was worth the money. I had fun and felt safe throughout the day, Juan’s enthusiasm for Dominican culture and showing visitors a real flavour of Santo Domingo was genuine and palpable. I loved the afternoon exploring, meeting local people. My highlight was holding a rooster, haha! And riding the cable car. This is a new tour, so you will help Juan and his community if you’re happy with your photos and videos being taken for the gram— he was open and honest about that, which I liked. I enjoyed especially meeting the locals, it was clear they loved the guys and were kind and curious towards me. English spoken by Juan was perfect. Sign up, you won’t regret it.

Juan was an amazing and knowledgable tour guide. It was lovely seeing and experiencing his culture especially the amazing rice we had at the start of the tour. It was well worth it especially if you aren't familiar with Santo Domingo. Would recommend this tour to any couple or solo traveler, you'll be in great hands and great company!!
