We took a trip to Reykjavik in order to fill a bucket list item for an elderly family member, and while we were there, as a bucket list item, I realized a helicopter tour would permit a unique vantage point and relative comfort. Nordurflug's website does a pretty good job trying to explain each of the tours, but it's so hard to pick from so many different unique experiences. We relied on the videos to give us a sense of what we might see on the tour, and then called Nordurflug.

We were helped by Vera Almeida, who was lovely and patiently answered our many questions. We were fortunate that there was an opening (we took the last flight of the day for a 3 hour flight, which was at about 4:30p local time) and after some back and forth between our family, we decided to take one particular experience but asked to add on a flyby of the active volcano that had ruined our opportunity to visit the Blue Lagoon. Also important to us; our group was 5; there are other helicopter tour companies, but some only provide enough seating for four.

This brings us to the hardest part of the experience - it was not cheap. But essentially we had our own private helicopter and an experienced guide - and as I learned long ago, you don't pay experts for their time, you pay them for their knowledge. The actual cost ended up being far more than we initially considered, but we realized this is why we work hard and save money - so we could indulge in this type of extravagance - the experience of a lifetime.

So we showed up - you want to make sure you go to the right spot, as many but not necessarily all taxi drivers may know where you are trying to go since this flight takes place from Reykjavik's local airport, not Keflavik. Nordurflug sent us an email that we could share with the driver. There was a nice waiting room with famous movies that Nordurflug supported, and you could relax and get hot drinks like coffee and tea - we didn't partake before our flight (we didn't want to need to go to the bathroom), but they were welcome afterwards to warm up.

We met our guide, Saevarr, who introduced himself with a big smile, and then showed us a map of Reykjavik, and our flight path. We then walked out to our waiting helicopter, took some pictures against it, and hopped in. A key suggestion I would provide is think about the flight and where you sit. You're going to want to take pictures or video, and you want to be prepared. The chopper we had could seat a maximum of seven, three in front and four in back. The pilot sits on the left side in the front, and the best seat in the place is in the front right; you have a huge open canopy for breathtaking views. The worst seats in my opinion are in the back, in the middle two, because you have a little less of a view. Still plenty of visibility, but just not as good relatively.

The most thrilling part for me, on some level as someone who never rode in a helicopter before - takeoff. There's something about taking off in a helicopter and the sudden liftoff from the ground that is amazing. Saevarr answered so many of our questions about the terrain, wildlife, life in Iceland. He ended up stopping in some amazing places for us, and showing us some breathtaking views of a waterfall, and a live volcano, zooming around. My wife loves mentioning Top Gun: Maverick to every pilot we meet, and every pilot she mentions it too always reacts with a big grin. I think Saevarr took it as us being happy to have a flight experience that was a little more adventurous, with zips and zooms and dips and dives. It was thrilling but a little dizzying. if you want that, or don't want that - mention to your pilot your openness to a more adventurous flight!

We were worried, with my elderly mother in law (over 80 years old) that the ride was going to be too much for her to take; but aside from the dips, flying in the helicopter was basically like sitting in a car. Very comfortable. Hiking on a glacier wasn't in the cards for her, but this was very manageable.

When we stopped and got out, some of the environments could be very cold - you may want to find out what to expect and dress accordingly. Our coldest stop was viewing a live volcano in the distance on a hilltop. It was amazing and freezing cold at the same time. Saevarr brought us some delicious champagne to enjoy as part of the experience - but we were a little underdressed and it was hard to take it all in!

Overall, it was very professional, very exciting, and very expensive. If you're going to have this type of experience, think about what you're looking to get out of it and don't be afraid to share what you want with the professionals at Nordurflug. We managed to get the experience of a lifetime, that my family can cherish.

The only way to get a real sense of the lava flows recently with the new lava still steaming. Great service super helicopter and a lovely one hour experience landing at one site and getting up close to the 21/23 new lava flows. Also fun to see the craters and the shore line from above. Well worth the money and a great firm to deal with

This is an incredible experience! There is no other way to understand the magnitude of volcanic activity than from above in a helicopter. Our pilot was professional, friendly, informative and responsive to our questions. He explained the most recent eruption and its effect on the nearby town of Grindavik. We learned a lot and had a ton of fun. Thank You.

My experience with the Nordurflug Helicopter Tours company started months ago when I began communicating with the staff via email and telephone.

As a powered wheelchair user, I strive to ask questions and provide information about my needs in advance, in order to facilitate a smoother experience in person. Unfortunately, some companies in my home country of Canada find this bothersome. Nordurflug treated me with dignity and respect, and I sort of fell in love with them for that 🥰

From my first contact with Gunnar in Customer Service, then Vera in Sales & Marketing, I was given clear information that built my confidence in their ability to work with me, regardless of my physical limitations, to provide me with an optimal experience. They made me feel like my presence was welcome, not a nuisance. They were so encouraging to me and hadn't even met me yet!

But then we DID meet... and oh my, they did not disappoint!! I didn't think it would be possible, but they exceeded my expectations.

Vera's beautiful smile was the first to greet me, and we instantly connected. She was kind, fun, and warm. What a delight!

We had originally booked the Valleys & Waterfall tour, but since we arrived a few days after the new volcano eruption, we were hoping to change the route. They happily obliged, and we chose to leave all the details up to the pilot as he would know best where to go, etc., and WOW!!! He sure did!!!

Sævar, our pilot, was absolutely awesome! This was the first time in a helicopter for all three of us, and he instantly made us feel at ease with him and his abilities. Another pilot (Julius, I think?) came over and gave Sævar a hand helping me from my wheelchair into my seat. They treated this white-haired old woman with such care. It was just precious. I'll never forget their kindness. Even the men at the Fire Department next door let me wheel through their vehicle bays to make my trip to the airfield a bit easier.

The actual flight was mesmerizing. A truly once in a lifetime experience. Sævar's communication skills and knowledge of the history of the area were terrific.

The care we received afterward, an informal debriefing if you will, since we were all pumped up with excitement, was well done. I am a hugger, so I asked Sævar and Vera both if I could hug them. Turns out they are huggers as well 😁  I actually found it difficult to take my leave of them. I didn't want the experience to end.

I would also like to mention that even in a smaller office area, this company made space for a large, fully accessible washroom. Their commitment to inclusitvity in all ways is to be commended.

The staff at Nordurflug, who all worked together from start to finish like a family, made this happen. I'll be forever grateful. I'll never forget them.
