Explore the mysterious, magical world of truffles, wander through the woods in the company of a local expert truffle hunter and his dogs and enjoy a unique and direct experience of this ancient tradition.
Truffles are a seasonal delicacy but in this area we are very lucky, in spring we can find the Marzuolo or March truffle, in summer the Tartufo Nero Scorzone, a black Summer truffle, while in winter there are black winter truffles but also sometimes the famous " Bianco delle Crete Senesi", the highly prized white truffle.
Outside our farm house we meet up with our expert truffle hunter and his wonderful dogs. To help you get the best of the companionship of the truffle hunter, a mine of information on truffles, the dogs, the woods and countryside and the local area in general you will be accompanied by an English speaking interpreter - generally an interpreter who also assists in the cooking classes and so able to give you tips on storing and using the truffles in the kitchen.

A fun walk through the woods with a knowledge guide, friendly translator, and several other tourists in the group. I had a great time and learned a lot about truffles and how they can be hunted. The dogs found many truffles and it was a fun experience! Definitely wear comfortable clothing and shoes as you’ll be off the beaten path and following the dogs as they find truffles!

This truffle hunt was one of the highlights of our trip to Tuscany! We got to see the truffle hunter and his dog (Daniele and Billy) work as a team to find truffles, and he educated us about everything along the way (thanks to Joya who translated into English for us). We found a bunch of black truffles (the type that are in season when we went). We then used those truffles in the cooking class we did afterwards- so fresh and delicious!

Roberto and Heather, with their 3 lovely dogs, showed my family what truly goes into truffle hunting. We had a wonderful morning and found both a number of truffles and a new appreciation for them. It was also really fun!

We headed to our truffle hunting adventure around 8:00am from our stay at Castello Delle Quattro Torra. Heather was very accommodating for our bit of a last minute inquiry to join a truffle hunt. This adventure was something I was really excited about participating in. The event required having an interpreter as Roberto the Truffle Hunter only spoke Italian. We pulled up and Heather our interpreter greeted us. The two lagotto dogs greeted us with great joy and excitement for the hunt they knew they were about to embark on. Camilla and Maya were their names. Roberto leads us into the field and immediately the dogs start their hunt. The sun is just starting to peer through the trees. There is still frost on the grass. Camilla spots truffles right away- it’s exciting and great joy at the finds. We go along the edge of the field and into the woods finding and collecting. Camilla and Maya are delighted because they get treats at each find, many many treats and love. I get to smell the white truffles and their scent. White truffles abound this morning. Black truffles are found as well as old ones. Roberto instructs them on what he wants them to find. We are in prime White Truffle season, the beginning really. Our finds are abundant this morning. Heather interprets stories for us about Roberto being a third generation truffle hunter and how his kids are also truffle hunters, how the dogs are trained by the mother. We hear stories of how the dogs remember the locations from previous finds. It’s all so exciting to participate in. Roberto is super happy when Camilla has dug up a large white truffle. He gives her lots of love and lots of treats. Roberto and Heather tell us stories of the relationship with the trees and the truffles. We are on their reserve for truffle hunting. We find truffles after truffles after truffles. It is joy, and giggles, and chasing and digging up dirt and smelling and holding them all with great cheer. It doesn’t get old, or any more authentic Tuscany than this. It is one of my favorite memories of Italy and I do hope to come up again.

Did not know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised the dogs were great how they can find truffles underground still baffles me. The hostess was very informative, and the outing was pleasant. Great place to go for a easy morning or afternoon.

Husband and I booked this through the wine villa we were staying at- it was a pricey excursion through them. It also included a tasting afterwards. There were 12 in our group and one dog/guide. Too many people for a group. After about 20 minutes- probably could have left. Basically you are watching a dog and his "hunter" dig up truffles. Seems like they extended this so that they could charge more money. Was disappointed how large the group was- felt like a money grab by the operator to allow a family of 8 join our group. More concerned with the bottom line than the experience. Afterwards our tasting platter- of the 8 items only one of them had a truffle on it. The bread was the worst we had in Italy. The honey that was served over with it- the operator than came over and did a high pressure sale to buy some. I did not want to provide my email but she was quite pushy and wanting it. Truffle hunting is definitely a worthwhile experience but I'm not sure this is place to do it.
