Spectacular experience from beginning to end. Service was impeccable, food was amazing, top notch views, live music, and delicious local cocktails such as Pisco sour & "a Peruvian cosmo". If you're thinking of a way to get from cusco to machu picchu, this is your sign to book the Hiram Bingham.

Well worth the money. The folks working the train take such great care of you and really go above and beyond to make your trip memorable. Food was outstanding and the service was perfect. Everything was perfectly timed and planned. Bus is waiting for you when you arrive and then you are right into Machu Picchu with a guided tour. Afternoon tea at the Belmont was also fantastic. My wife and I were very glad we chose this option to get to and from Machu Picchu.

Day is long. They picked us up at 6:40 and we got home at 22:00. But we ate, drank, sang, danced, laughed and saw Machu Picchu and came back full and happy. The level of service is what you would expect with the price. EVERYONE and I sincerely mean EVERYONE who worked on this trip was cheerful, polite, competent. Madai and Cesar in the train restaurant as well as the bartender whose name I didn’t get were top notch. Our guide Carlos took us in a small group of 8 to Machu Picchu and he gave us great information and didn’t rush. He was with us all day and knew my name. The day starts with a pick up at your hotel then a drop off at a bus where you ride to a train station. At the train station there is a snack, music playing, local dancing. NEVER was anyone looking for a tip - again a class operation. Henry the manager was also with us all day and attended to everyones needs. At this train station you board the special upscale Hiram Binham train with a lovely dining car (cloth tablecloths) very nice bar (all drinks are included) and a room past the bar where you can get in the open air for photos. The organization was good. The musicians who played in the bar are were excellent - great mix of rock and spanish music and knew every song anyone requested. By the return trip the group was dancing and singing and refused to go to dinner without another song. The two meals were abundant and well prepared. Here again - excellent service and you could request a different meal if you wanted to. The train gets as far as Aguas Calientes then you have a bus (short ride) to the entrance to Machu Picchu. If you want to spend many hours in Machu Picchu this is not your trip. We only spent 2.5 - 3 hours at the site. It was enough for us. We also had some rain but that is beyond control. You feel very pampered and VIP on this trip. I liked t!

Not a train service I would recommend

There were many issues with the whole experience.

The carriages were old and the interior was also very old. While I have no problems with the vintage look - in fact I do love the charm of a classic carriage - the carpet in the dining carriage itself had a strange smell to it.

This was much much worse in the bar carriage - especially at the bar counter. If I could describe it - it was like a wet dog had been living in the bar area.

The dinner was unfortunately average at best. I’ve had much better food in the air. The wines served on board were honestly terrible and there was no option to purchase premium wines like on the Andean Explorer and Sacred Valley trains.

The worst part was the overall service. The staff appeared tired and not did not seem very willing to serve. There was none of the attentiveness and preemptive service that you expect from Belmond. Now I do understand the restrictions of the kitchen on the carriage. But having taken the Andean Explorer and the Sacred Valley trains just 1 - 2 weeks prior, I can say the Hiram Bingham is absolutely not worth the experience even if you had a major discount.
The crew on the Andean Explorer and the Sacred Valley train were spectacular.

The only real benefit was the private transfer to and from the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge. So if you’re staying there, it is a bit more convenient. However this private transfer is not particularly comfortable though, as the bus is the same or even older than some of the standard buses that ply the same route.

If you’ve tried the Hiram Bingham previously or have heard rave reviews from the past - I would seriously think twice about booking this train service. My group were left sorely disappointed.

I have travelled with Belmond trains around the world and my expectations are high and I was unsure what to expect for a day trip - I was impressed. From m the start staff were friendly and welcoming - learning our names immediately and would call us by our names throughout. The journey started with Peruvian dancers and music at the station. Once we set off there was more entertainment in the bar car. My mother was not feeling well and without a word to staff they could tell something wasn’t right. They moved us to a quieter location, provided a blanket and pillow and offered whatever they could to help her feel better. By our arrival in Machu Picchu she felt 100% thanks to their attentive care. As for me, I enjoyed a delicious lunch made from local ingredients. If you have dietary restrictions they are very good at accommodating. Transfer from the station to Machu Picchu involved a short walk to a bus. If you have mobility issues they really do limit the walk and inclines. High tea is provided after the tour and is a nice way unwind. Once back on the train the entertainment starts again and yet another delicious meal. This is how to do Machu Picchu. It is well organized, staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating and the whole experience is delightful. The food was some of the best I’ve had on a Belmond train.

The magic of our Machu Picchu adventure began with the Hiram Bingham train. The attention to detail, starts with a “welcome drink and dance” , followed by a blessing for safe travel. The train itself is luxurious. There is a kitchen carriage, two dining cars, and a bar and lounge area. You are assigned a table where you can stay for the trip or move to the bar lounge area to enjoy the music. The three piece band was SERIOUSLY amazing, providing wonderful atmosphere as well as great music. The food service was impeccable, discrete yet attentive. Brunch (very substantial, more like lunch) on the way up and dinner on the way back with afternoon tea served at Machu Picchu featured local cuisine made from high quality, fresh food.
One of the major benefits to this train service is the reserved coach ride from the train station to Machu Picchu. There are public bus shuttles that offer the same service but the lines were long.
Let’s face it, this is an expensive way to see Machu Picchu. However if you can afford it and you want the journey itself to be a highlight, then this is the way to do it.
