Our driver will pick you up at hotel lobby. Take about 1.5 hour’s drive from Beijing City to Mutianyu Great Wall and hike on the wall as long as you can. Mutianyu Great Wall is one popular section of the Great Wall but less crowded than other sections, well-known for its beautiful surroundings-the dense woods and rich pastures changing colors with the seasons of the year.and then Summer Palace, After the trip, transfer you back to hotel.

We wanted to do the Summer Palace and Great Wall but then head directly to the airport afterwards, and it was really flexible to get that added to our schedule. Our driver, Jim, had all the tickets ready, got us tickets for the chair lift / toboggan as well, and everything was really smooth. WeChat was easily used to coordinate everything.

So lucky we booked this private trip as unbeknown to us, this day happened to be a public holiday and this means CHAOS in China. We are not early risers so we originally booked for 10am departure but the tour company got in touch and strongly recommended to leave at 6am rather. We reluctantly accepted but thank science we did as the masses at the Great Wall would have otherwise been a killer. So early we managed to avoid the worst and even got some great photos with hardly any people around. We paid extra for the ski lift ride to the top and the toboggan chute back down and were glad we did as the wall itself is exhausting as hell. Much steeper than you'd expect from pictures but well worth doing as it's just amazing to stand up there and looking at the seemingly never-ending wall.
The second part of our trip was the Summer Palace and on a crazily busy day like this one, we wouldn't do it again in hindsight. Not the drivers fault at all but by the afternoon when we arrived here, it was an absolute mess. People everywhere, cold drinks sold out at almost all the vending stalls and walking once around that entire lake takes aaaages, especially when there are people taking phots of each other in your way at every possible spot. Yes, it's a beautiful park and might be great on a less busy day but it's very exhausting and tiring to do together with the wall.
One word about our driver: This tour is including and English speaking driver and that's precisely what you get- not a tour guide, a driver, they tend to be quite literal about these things in China. We were quite happy not happing to engage too much this early in the morning or totally exhausted in the end of the day but while courteous and friendly, the driver indeed was more of an introvert. So if you want someone to tell you about the history of the wall or even just to do some chit chat on your way, then a different tour would probably a better choice.

Our driver Ruby was prompt and friendly. We made good time and were able to beat the crowd at the Great Wall and had easy access to the Summer Palace.

The price was good but be clear that this is not a tour. It is just transportation to the Great Wall (1.5 hours each way) and to the Summer Palace (which is closer to the center of Beijing). The driver was pleasant and provided me a bag of fruit to snack on. It was private with no other tourists with me.

Great experience - the tour operator Jenny was very helpful and communicative. Our driver Fred was a lovely chap and dropped us right in the heart of the city after the tour. Great wall was fantastic and quiet at our time of arrival. One thing to note - at the summer palace, there is a second ticket barrier before entering the big tower - make sure to arrive here before the afternoon ticket expires (3pm) or a second entry must be purchased.

The Great Wall was really worth it, though hiking up to it was quite exhausting. We had some delicious local food when returning to the base station. The trip was amazing!
