Visit the religious center of Portugal – Fátima - where you can learn more about the phenomenon of the Marian apparitions, which took place for the first time on May 13th, 1917. Visit the Sanctuary, the Basilica and the Apparitions Chapel. In the afternoon visit the magnificent city of Coimbra, where the University area, the Cathedral and the Historic Centre can be visited.

Your expert guide will collect you at your accommodation and will drive you from Porto to the Fátima, on of the most famous and important sites in Portugal due to the events known as the Apparitions of Fátima, that took place there in 1917.

It's time to discover Fátima. With its origins deep in history, it was during the Arabian occupation that this settlement developed and was named. According to legend, during the Christian Reconquest, the Templar knight Gonçalo Hermingues, also known as Bringer-of-Moors, fell in love with Fátima, a Moor captured in the course of an ambush. Reciprocating the love, the young woman converted to Christianity and adopted the name Oureana. In the sixteenth century, the settlement became a parish in the collegiate church of Ourém within the Diocese of Leiria. Its subsequent development dates from the events known as the Apparitions of Fátima, in the early part of the twentieth century. It has become one of the key centers for the Cult of the Virgin Mary in Portugal and has been recognised world-wide by the Catholic Church.

One of the largest Marian centres in the world. This Marian centre of pilgrimage evokes the apparitions of Our Lady to the three little shepherds Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta, which took place in 1917 and were recognized in 1930. The spot was a rural property called Cova da Iria, and it belonged to the parents of Lucia, who donated it to the Shrine. It was here that five of the six apparitions took place

The Chapel, in the heart of the current Fátima Sanctuary, was built by local people in 1919 in response to the request made by Our Lady during one of the apparitions.

The three shepherd children to whom Our Lady appeared - Lúcia and her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta - were born in the small village of Aljustrel, around 2 kms from the sanctuary of Fátima.

Our last stop will be Coimbra, a city known for its academic life, a city that gives life to those who lost it. You will have the opportunity to get to know a little bit of academic life but also of the general culture that surrounds the university. Take advantage of this moment to stroll through the picturesque streets of this magical city.

Helder Paiva was an excellent tour guide. He explained a lot about the history of Portugal on the way to Fatima and on the way home. He was clearly knowledgeable. He personalized the walking tour of the site of the apparitions and gave us plenty of free time to explore the shrine and the surrounding areas. The trip to Coimbra was a bit short, but he did a great job explaining what the city was all about as well as its unique history. Helder even spent time with my wife and I after the tour ended answering our questions and giving us even more history Excellent tour for the money!! We went on May 29th and there were five other people on the tour.

Our tour guide Jorge Ferro was wonderful from start to finish!!! Very cool infos about the places we went by, historical background tips, safe driving and the bus was super comfortable as well! Jorge made sure we were satisfied throughout the whole journey and the check in experience at living tours store was smooth and organized! Totally recommend the guide, the places and the whole experience! ❤️

We arrived expecting a big bus full of people but there ended up just 7 of us on this tour. Our driver was great - knowledgeable of Fatima and the history. And he was a rock star leading us around Coimbra. It is a really hilly city and he drove us to the university, let us walk down at our pace - then he ran up and got the van! It was a rainy, windy day but a great way to see both these places in Pprtugal.

Great trip with an excellent guide/driver. Our guide Tiago arrived at our hotel on time, answered all our questions with great professionalism, clarity, and genuine enthusiasm. He showed us his vast knowledge of Portuguese history and culture but was able to interject entertaining stories as well. He also improved our overall experience by reordering our trip destinations to avoid expected crowds in Coimbra during graduation day. He was also extremely good at customizing our tour of Fatima to our needs. The overall trip was well paced, entertaining, and a great value.

We had a great time! Margaridia was knowledgeable and kind. Her English and Spanish tour was perfect. We loved our stops in Coimbra, the shepherd town, and at Fatima. There was just enough time to see everything since we had a quick lunch in Coimbra and not the lunch provided by the tour.

Francisco is a great tour guide, very knowledgeable. Drove a small group of us (8 travelers) in a comfortable van. Glad he recommended the optional buffet lunch at a 4 star hotel in Fatima (great price with wine included), we enjoyed it very much. Noticed Living Tours have better vans than other tour company we joined in Lisbon. Bring an umbrella on a hot day for shade!
