I can't say enough great things about this excursion. The tour guide Rene, the cooks and the horse handlers were all incredible in making our experience the best it could be. Great food!!
Incredible sights for the entire trek and a great opportunity to challenge yourself, meet other travelers, and learn about Inca history and tradition. Rene was very knowledgeable and gracious in sharing the culture with us.
I would strongly recommend making time for this if you're spending some time in Peru!

From the point of view of Challenge, mental and physical energies are required. However at the end of the trek the accomplish of getting Machu picchu is really rewarding. Shalkantay is a beauty difficult to forget. To prepare all the arrangements Luis was very efficient. At the end of the trek made a really accurated explanation of Machu picchu and the inca culture as well as peruvian culture now a days.

Every details of the trail is well explained in advance. During the trek u can leave your heavy stuff (10Kg) in a horse and take the essencials things with u in a small bag. The firts day u go to the top of Humantay lake. a beautiful "laguna" in high altitud sourranded by un icy, rocky wall that take u breath away. During that night if u are like enough you can see the sky in from your glass roof tent.

The second day is the hardest one. walking up to the salkantay pass (4650 m) where u can find some snow in the top and see the colossus montain of Salkantay. u can see diffentes climates forn the rocky montains to the jungle (ceja de selva) close to Machu Picchu. 3 th day is pretty easy, quite flat. you arrived a "aguas calientes" and have a proper shower and rest well for next day. On the 4th day u reach the beauty of Machu Picchu and Luis will resolve any doubt about it and the culture of the region. THe day before Luis was dinning with us and i was a really friendly and happy meeting talking about diferrencies and similarities of ours countries (Spain and Peru). really enjoyble conversation

we were able to take many great pictures and have really good conversations with ours companions in the trek, what make the hike un experience difficult to forget and also a thing that will keep in our minds for a very long time

I put myself to the challenge and joined the Salkantay Trek with Incas Destination. I didn't have a lot of experience hiking but I manage to complete the trek succesfully.
It's a beautiful trail which leads you through different climates. On the first day you visit the Humantay Lake located on high altitude, a beautiful lake with an icy wall on the background. The second day is the most challenging, in the morning we were walking up to the Salkantay pass in the snow, in the afternoon we walked down all the way to the high jungle. Very interesting to see the vegetation slowly change, from snow to a green forrest environment.
After the 2nd day the trek gets a bit easier. On the 4th day you will visit Machu Picchu, which is simply amazing.
The guides are able to explain all the stories well in English and they create a nice atmosphere amongst the participants. I joined solo but I met many people on the way. You will wake up early everyday, but trust me you will fall asleep early as well after being outdoor all day. The food is great!
I was able to take so many great pictures of the beautiful landscapes, so if you're hesitating to bring a camera definitely do it. Besides, you are able to put 10 kilos of your stuff on a horse while you're walking.
Ps. I didn't use any walking sticks, it's definitely possible. Only my knees hurt a bit after walking down a lot, I think using sticks could have prevented it.
