We had a great experience with Damien our tour guide. He knows the background information of the Ebony Forest very well. He also recognizes the bird sounds immediately. Through this way he finds the birds before we can see them. With nature there is never a guarentee you will see all the bird species you would like. But even with a lot of rain we found 5 out of 7 of the Endemic bird species.

I highly recommend doing the bird watching tour in Ebony forest with the guide Damien. We saw seven of the nine indigenous birds, spiders, stunning geckos and plenty of other animals and beautiful flora, especially the precious ebony trees. The trail is easy to walk as long as you are fine with hills. It’s a lot of signs and easy to get there by car.

We had a fantastic time at Ebony Forest. Our guide Damien lead us through the reserve and showed us many, many beautiful wonders of nature, from birds and other wildlife, to the different structures of forest. You could feel that he really enjoyed his work. He explained everything with so much enthusiasm and knowledge. Thank you, Damien for this amazing day. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Mauritius! Thank you also to Sonia, who organised the trip for us. And then of course thank you to everyone else working in the reserve, for all your efforts in managing, restoring and caring for this wonderful piece of Earth :)

Remarkable site to be preserved and expanded. Chris our guide introduced us to the Ebony Forest choir with its flora and fauna. An unforgettable memory. We made donations for plantations and I joined everyone in participating.
Congratulations to the whole team for their outstanding work and thank you Chris.

I am a biologist and where I live in Germany, I work part-time and voluntarily for the local LBV Board of Bird and Nature Protection (Landesbund für Natur- und Vogelschutz in Bayern). Despite being only 4 days on Mauritius, I was able to reserve a place on the bird watching tour with just 2 days notice.
The 4-hour tour started at 0900 so I was able to get a taxi from my hotel in Port Louis. I was met by Sonia at the park office who is a most charming person. But it was Joana who led the tour. There were 5 persons on the tour that morning at a reasonable cost of 1800 rupees or around 35 Euros pp. Everybody wanted to see the endangered Mauiritus kestrel not least because of the amazing work carried out to stop this species becoming extinct. There are 2 pairs on the reserve and one of the nest boxes is right next to the tour starting point. It took only about 10mins before both birds showed up and we all got good photos. So lucky we waited! During the wait, several Mauritius parakeets flew past. Both birds are endemics and Ebony Forest is home to 7 of the 9 Mauritius bird endemics. In short, we went on to see all 7 of the local endemics on the tour including the Mauritus paradise flycatcher.
However, the tour is more than just about bird watching. We had an opportunity to learn about the valuable conservation work going on in an effort to prevent extinction of the flora and fauna. The tour includes a raised walking part and walking through mixed jungle. The route has some climbs but nothing too steep or scary/dangerous. Running shoes were sufficient foot wear. Near the end we reached a view point which has an amazing view over the island and sea. The tour included a drink and a light snack at that point. A landrover picked us up for the last km so we arrived back at the starting point at 1315.
The tour was over 4km long. Joana answered all our questions and was most passionate about her work. If you are a birder like me then you will not be disappointed. This tour is value for money and will leave with you with fond memories of what can be done to restore some of the island's original state before it is too late!

In our 2weeks trip we visited the Ebony Forest Reserve two times. first time we booked the Jeep tour to the top. Kris was an excellent guide. He explained a lot about the ebony trees and the endemic species. The stay on the top with nice drinks and snack was the perfect ending for our second day on Mauritius.

Joana was the guide for our second trip to the Ebony forest. We booked the bird watching tour for 4 hours with a walk/hiking mix. Joana is a very experienced guide. She tried to find every bird that is unique on Mauritius. Also the guiding through the aviaries where the endangered birds are preserved was very interesting. The effort to keep this wonderful species alive and the recreation of the rainforest is unbelievable.

Thank you so much to the team of the Ebony forest reserve. The visits and guided hikes where definitely on of our highlights during our trip to Mauritius. Especially as birders. 😀

Brilliant tour by excellent guides. Damien and Jounne (apologies if not spelt correctly) guided us by spotting birds and informing us about the Ebony Forest as a whole. Knowledgable as well as easy to talk to generally about the flora, fauna and Mauritius as a whole. Four people c two guides - amazing. Thank you

Splendid day. A 6 k walk specially designed for bird watchers. Absolutely stunning with board walks going high up in the canopies. Did see 5 out of seven endemic species and one should never expect to see more than 1 or 2 during a 4 our walk.
Knowledgable young guide with lots of stuff to share. I also thought the little resting points cool.
