The annual Monarch butterfly migration is one of nature’s great spectacles and a top attraction for visitors to Mexico’s central highlands. From 60 million to one billion Monarch butterflies goes from eastern Canada to central Mexico for more than 2,500 miles. The Monarch butterflies spend their winter hibernation clustered in small areas of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve.

We were thrilled with our Monarch Butterfly Tour! The butterflies were stunning and weather perfect, and our guide Ivan was very attentive. It’s a big hike, but well worth the effort!

Francisco was a great guide setting a gentle pace and giving us plenty time to enjoy the ambience. The views of the butterflies were amazing.

The tour guide was outstanding and friendly. The guides at the reserve really helped us old folks get up the trail. We took horses most of the way, but had to hike the last part of the route. Our escorts looked after our well-being and safety.
We didn’t see the monarchs fly, but we did see lots of them on the trees.
We had a great experience thanks to the local guides and their attentiveness.

We took a private tour from Mexico City. The drive is around three hours one way. Our tour guide George was great and shared lots of information about Mexico and the culture along the way. At the sanctuary we chose to ride horses up the mountain to the location where the Monarchs migrate. The horses take you part of the way and then you are on foot for the remainder of the hike. The hike is challenging. The terrain is rugged.
At the migration point, we were only allowed to stay about 15 mins. Seeing the Monarch’s was outstanding! They flutter and land everywhere! Our guides from the sanctuary were kind, patient and friendly. After we hiked back down we enjoyed authentic food made by locals. Overall a wonderful experience. Viator does not share the amount of time spent at the migration point and this is why I rated it four stars. However Monarchs are magical and I highly recommend this experiment!

waiting on a street corner and no ride showing up for a $150 tour. when I called they told me that they had cancelled. After they reviewed they agreed that NO notification had been sent. As a result, they offered to rebook me for $207. I wanted the tour bad enough to agree to the extra $57. My guide did not speak English (as promised) - at all. Not a word. Now I find out they double charged me! I want at least the double charge refunded.

We specifically booked a trip to El Rosario and this was confirmed in writing. Our guide took us to Pietra Herrada which we had previously researched and did not want to travel to. The private contactor apologized for Victor's deception but said that they were paid to take us to the wrong place...not knowing about Victor's deception. We are owed a refund!!

This was an amazing expedition. Beto was so kind and accommodating, even brought us to get tacos on the way, some of the most amazing tacos I've ever had. The day started out cloudy but as we arrived the clouds parted and the butterflies came out! A perfect day, thank you Beto!

Viator was an easy online reservation service. Eduardo spoke excellent English and drove us(quickly) to a beautiful small reserve. He did not accompany us up the mountain- we paid additional money for the guide (required). Well worth it to have a private drive. Did not need to have an “English” guide, since there was little butterfly guiding done

This is not a private guided tour of the Butterfly Sanctuary for "just your party" or "at your pace" or "in English". It is advertised as all of those things. But in fact, is is just an English-speaking DRIVER TO the Sanctuary, which for Mexico, it is significantly overpriced. Once you get to the Sanctuary, the driver makes you go with a larger, only Spanish-speaking group and guide. You have to go at the group's pace and you cannot understand anything that the guide telling you about the butterflies. When I challenged Viator on these lies in the description, they said that since the "drop off and pick up were on time" that they consider the service to be fulfilled, which again indicates that this should be described as a super expensive driver, not as a private tour. I am continuing to escalate this scam and deception to Viator. And to top it all off, our driver spent most of the drive texting while driving, which is unsafe and even after I said that it made me nervous that he did that, he continued to do it for the entire ride. Do not pay for this!

Eduardo was a great host on our tour. We left the hotel at 8:30 and got to the butterfly park pretty early. When we got there it wasn’t crowded. When we were leaving it just started to get crowded. Maybe aak the tour if you could go even a little earlier to miss the crowd completely. Eduardo spoke very well in English and Spanish and it came in handy when we wanted to hire the horses for the tour. The horses were the right way to go for us. The short hike was challenging mostly due to the change in altitude. I would suggest bringing a professional camera if you have one and enjoy photography. It’s very hard to get those closeup shots with a cellphone camera. Also bring cash, there are no atms and they won’t take credit cards.
