The ancient Greek colony dedicated to the god Poseidon is still intact with its monumental temples, the amphitheatre and paved roads. An ancient legend tells that Giason, leader of the the Argonauts expedition, arrived to the mouths of the Sele where he built a sanctuary in honour of Hera. Here, across the river, Greek settlers from Sibari founded Poseidonia around 600 B.C. The guided tour includes the sacred area of the Greek city with the temples, the square intended for political and commercial activities, the amphitheatre, some shops and houses. After visiting the archaeological area, you reach the Archaeological Museum, to see architectural materials from the temples, Greek vases decorated with mythological scenes and, above all, the famous Tomb of the Diver dated back to 470 B.C., an extraordinary document for its uniqueness.
